Dr. Natilan Crutcher, visiting assistant professor of music at Ouachita Baptist University, released an album of original instrumental compositions in November titled “Awakening.” The album was composed, recorded and edited by Crutcher.

“’Awakening’ was inspired by my relationship with Jesus Christ,” Crutcher said. “Composing music is a gift from the Lord that I did not ask for or expect but that I now cherish and honor. I knew that if the Lord wanted me to produce this album, then it was going to be a blessing to someone.”

Ouachita Baptist University’s Dr. Jerusa Carvajal-Villamar, assistant professor of Spanish, recently presented a paper at the biennial meeting of the Society for Amazonian & Andean Studies (SAAS). The conference was held Oct. 5-6 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and was hosted by the University of Alabama.

The SAAS national conference is dedicated to studying, featuring and promoting research about the Amazonian and Andean regions of South America. Miss Virginia Queen, Professor Emerita of Music at Ouachita Baptist University, died Wednesday, March 29, at age 96.

Miss Queen, who graduated from Ouachita in 1944 with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees, also earned a Master of Music degree from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She taught at Prescott High School and the Tennessee College for Women before joining the Ouachita music faculty in 1946. She retired in 1986 after 40 years of service at Ouachita. In recent years, she resided at Parkway Village in Little Rock.

Dr. Merribeth Bruning, dean of Ouachita Baptist University’s Michael D. Huckabee School of Education since 2006, has resigned effective Aug. 1 to accept a similar position as dean of education at Anderson University in Indiana.

An OBU student research team won the Collaborative Research Award, the largest prize of the convention, for the second consecutive year. Junior Jace Bradshaw earned one of two national Edwin W.
