Feedback is important in education. It is commonly believed that immediate feedback is very important. That is why instructors stay often late at night grading students' assignments -- to make sure that the students get their feedback as early as possible. However, surprisingly, experiments show that in many cases, delayed feedback is more efficient that the immediate one. In this paper, we provide a simple geometric explanation of this seemingly counter-intuitive empirical phenomenon.

We always teach students that cramming for a test is a bad idea, that they should study at the same speed throughout the semester – but many still cram. We ourselves are not that different: when we prepare papers for a conference, we often “cram” in the last days before the deadline instead of working with a regular speed for the whole time before the conference. It is well known that the best way to learn the new material is to try it, to make mistakes, and to learn from these mistakes. However, the current grading scheme, in which the overall grade is a weighted average of the grades for all the assignments, exams, etc., does not encourage mistakes: any mistake decreases the grade on the corresponding assignment and thus, decreases the overall grade for the class. The objective of this research is to design and analyze the performance of a new mechanism to improve the advising of students in a nontraditional environment. This nontraditional environment includes: a minority serving, commuter campus with a high percentage of transfer students. Specifically, these demographics are unable to keep a tightly controlled cohort of students flowing through to the completion of the curriculum. The more skills a student acquires, the more successful this student is with the corresponding tasks. Empirical data shows that the success in a task grows as a logistic function of skills; this dependence is known as the Rasch model. In this paper, we provide two uncertainty-based justifications for this model: the first justification provides a simple fuzzy-based intuitive explanation for this model, while the second -- more complex one -- explains the exact quantitative behavior of the corresponding dependence.

Interpreting students' views of infinity posits a challenge for researchers due to the dynamic nature of the conception. There is diversity and variation among students' process-object perceptions. The fluctuations between studentsâ?? views however reveal an undeveloped duality conception. This study examined college students' conception of duality in understanding and representing infinity with the intent to design strategies that could guide researchers in categorizing students' views of infinity into different levels.

A 20 century German Jewish philosopher Franz Rosenzweig promoted a new approach to knowledge, an approach in which in addition to logical reasoning, coming up with stories with imagined additional details is also important. This approach is known as midrashic since it is similar to the use of similar stories -- known as midrashes -- in Judaism. While stories can make the material interesting, traditionally, such stories are not viewed as a serious part of scientific discovery. In this paper, we show that this seemingly non-logical approach can actually be explained in logical terms and thus, makes perfect rational sense.

This study investigates the validity of the Likelihood-to-Act (LtA) survey developed to assess respondents' problem-solving disposition along the impulsive-analytic dimension. Sixteen pre-service teachers were strategically selected from a pool of 495 LtA survey respondents to participate in a semi-structured task-based interview approximately one hour in length. The interview consisted of three main parts: a problem solving section, a consistency section, and a classification section.

The analysis focused on the presence of different thinking modes, metonymies, and metaphors found on the interview responses to questions related to linear independence, span, and spanning sets of four students taking their first linear algebra course at the college level. The findings provide insight of how first year linear algebra students move from one thinking mode to another and what kind of metonymies and metaphors are used to construct new knowledge. Thesis analyzed the presence of two cognitive entities-- modes of thinking and metonymies and metaphors- in the reasoning of three students enrolled in a first year matrix algebra course at a southwest university via the responses given to a set of eight questions asked during one-on-one interviews.
