How Do School Leaders Navigate Ict Educational Reform? Policy Learning Narratives From A Singapore Context, Vicente C. Reyes Jr Nov 2014

How Do School Leaders Navigate Ict Educational Reform? Policy Learning Narratives From A Singapore Context, Vicente C. Reyes Jr

Dr. Vicente C Reyes Jr

The purpose of this research inquiry focuses on how school leaders ‘make sense’ of educational reform in their local contexts. In order to do this, an exploratory qualitative case study of two schools that took part in policy reform initiatives directed at ubiquitous use of information communication and technology (ICT) in the Singapore city–state context is undertaken. Using focus group discussions (FGDs), interviews and observations this inquiry investigates and builds emerging explanations to sense-making experiences of actors in the midst of reforms. Using Bruner’s narrative analysis, findings from this inquiry provide a picture of how school leaders cope in periods …

Focus On Family: Research On Family Learning In Free-Choice Settings, Ana Houseal, Colleen Bourque

Ana K Houseal

The National Park Service (NPS) Advisory Board Education Committee was charged with identifying areas that would improve life-long learning in the NPS. In this session, we will present three components of a project looking at family learning in free-choice settings that emerged from this request. The components will include: a literature review developed for the NPS; complementary involvement of NPS personnel in reviewing literature and their voices; and a look at novices and experts in interpretation and research and their roles in crowd-sourced research. The presentations will be followed by round-table discussions, where participants will explore the ideas further.

Developing A Curriculum Framework For Yellowstone’S Youth Conservation Corps, Kristen Schulte, Ana K. Houseal Nov 2014

Developing A Curriculum Framework For Yellowstone’S Youth Conservation Corps, Kristen Schulte, Ana K. Houseal

Ana K Houseal

Yellowstone’s Youth Conservation Corps is a youth employment program founded on service learning concepts implemented through stewardship projects. Education is integrated into all projects through the Resource Education Curriculum (REC). To enhance the REC, in 2012-2013 a framework was created and implemented to assist in the development of 17 environmental educational (EE) lessons. Five major bodies of knowledge emerged: leadership, cultural heritage, stewardship, ecological relationships, and sustainability. These acted as a springboard for developing clear participant outcomes and a diversity of instructional strategies. The purpose of this session is to help strengthen interpretation programs by exploring a framework for curriculum …

Is Outdoor Instruction Used For The Enhancement Of Academic Instruction: A Survey Of Teachers Who Implement Outdoor Instruction In Their Curriculum, Heidi Gomez Nov 2014

Is Outdoor Instruction Used For The Enhancement Of Academic Instruction: A Survey Of Teachers Who Implement Outdoor Instruction In Their Curriculum, Heidi Gomez

Education Undergraduate Research

This paper looks at a survey to current teachers to see if outdoor instruction, or outdoor education, is being used in today's society of common core standards. Teachers were asked a series of questions to see how they implement their curriculum with outdoor instruction. Not all educators have access to an outdoor source so outdoor instruction is almost obsolete, if not only used for physical education.

Success Against All Odds Lessons Learned From Successful, Impoverished Students, Amanda L. King Nov 2014

Success Against All Odds Lessons Learned From Successful, Impoverished Students, Amanda L. King

Senior Honors Theses

The effects of poverty on students’ education have been well documented and a positive correlation can be seen between these effects and their academic success. What is unclear, however, are the exceptions to this correlation. How do students from low-socio-economic status (SES) families succeed despite the seemingly insurmountable odds they face? The literature from a wide variety of longitudinal—and interview-based studies from the past three decades suggests that character traits such as persistence, determination, and curiosity are key to their success. Schools with a majority student body from low-SES homes have found success in meeting and exceeding state standards through …

The Hyperreality Of Daniel Boorstin, Stephanie L. Viens Nov 2014

The Hyperreality Of Daniel Boorstin, Stephanie L. Viens

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Early media theorists can help us to link the past and present of media literacy to pose new questions and gain new knowledge. Historian, author and Librarian on Congress Daniel Boorstin (1914 – 2004) played an important role in increasing public awareness of the constructed nature of media representations. Connections are explored between constructed reality, technological advances, media literacy education, and the current work of media scholar Douglas Rushkoff on presentist society. Daniel Boorstin helped recognize the changing nature of knowledge in an image-saturated environment and influenced a new generation of theorists, scholars and educators who have advanced the …

The Core Concepts: Fundamental To Media Literacy Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow, Tessa Jolls, Carolyn Wilson Nov 2014

The Core Concepts: Fundamental To Media Literacy Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow, Tessa Jolls, Carolyn Wilson

Journal of Media Literacy Education

“New media” does not change the essence of what media literacy is, nor does it affect its ongoing importance in society. Len Masterman, a UK-based professor, published his ground-breaking books in the 1980’s and laid the foundation for media literacy to be taught to elementary and secondary students in a systematic way that is consistent, replicable, measurable and scalable on a global basis – and thus, timeless. Masterman’s key insight was that the central unifying concept of media education is that of representation: media are symbolic sign systems that must be decoded. This paper explores the development and the application …

Teaching About Propaganda: An Examination Of The Historical Roots Of Media Literacy, Renee Hobbs, Sandra Mcgee Nov 2014

Teaching About Propaganda: An Examination Of The Historical Roots Of Media Literacy, Renee Hobbs, Sandra Mcgee

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Contemporary propaganda is ubiquitous in our culture today as public relations and marketing efforts have become core dimensions of the contemporary communication system, affecting all forms of personal, social and public expression. To examine the origins of teaching and learning about propaganda, we examine some instructional materials produced in the 1930s by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA), which popularized an early form of media literacy that promoted critical analysis in responding to propaganda in mass communication, including in radio, film and newspapers. They developed study guides and distributed them widely, popularizing concepts from classical rhetoric and expressing them in …

Media Now: A Historical Review Of A Media Literacy Curriculum, Yonty Friesem, Diane Quaglia Beltran, Ed Crane

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The Elizabeth Thoman Archive at the Harrington School of Communication and Media, University of Rhode Island, has the last complete kit of one of the milestones in the early chronology of media literacy, the 1972 Media Now curriculum. This curriculum was the first of its kind, using self-contained lesson modules that were part of a larger series of kits, text references, and accompanying workbook. Its self-directed learning model gave students the opportunity to learn about the media, by doing, responding to, and reflecting on core concepts of media production. Using physical artifacts from the Media Now kit, historical documents, promotional …

Why History Matters For Media Literacy Education, Michael Robbgrieco Nov 2014

Why History Matters For Media Literacy Education, Michael Robbgrieco

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The ways people have publicly discussed and written about media literacy in the past have great bearing on how citizens, educators and learners are able to think about and practice their own media literacy. Our concepts of media literacy have evolved over time in response to changing contexts of media studies and educational discourses as well as changes in communication technologies, media industries, politics, and popular culture. My research on the history of Media&Values magazine 1977-1993, made possible by the Elizabeth Thoman Media Literacy Archive, illustrates how tracing developments of media literacy concepts over time can give us much needed …

Introduction To Media Literacy History, Sarah Bordac

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Why is it important for us to consider the history of media literacy? Beyond forging connections of the past to the present, exploring the history of the field can deepen intellectual curiosity and understanding for those who work in media literacy education, ignite interest in others, and drive investigation into understanding the relationships of the facets and fundamentals of media literacy from past to present and into the future. The theme of leadership emerges from questions such as: How do people build programs? How does information get disseminated? What were the challenges? Who were the learners? Who were the teachers? …

Creating Critical Viewers, Renee Cherow-O'Leary Nov 2014

Creating Critical Viewers, Renee Cherow-O'Leary

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This essay is a personal reflection on the implementation of Creating Critical Viewers, a national media literacy program sponsored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), an industry association, in 1995. The television industry’s decision to develop a media literacy curriculum in the 1990s was a powerful statement by certain broadcasters to take seriously the ethical and social questions being raised about the impact of their work and to learn how to address those questions through education.

Rankings In Institutional Strategies And Processes: Impact Or Illusion, Ellen Hazelkorn, Tia Loukkola, Thérèse Zhang

Reports

Higher education is undergoing rapid change in response to developments occurring at national and international level. Today, universities’ performance worldwide is increasingly being measured using rankings which have been developed by governmental and/or commercial agencies, at both national and international level. The Rankings in Institutional Strategies and Processes (RISP) project is the first pan-European study of the impact and influence of rankings on European higher education institutions. The project has sought to build understanding of how rankings impact and influence the development of institutional strategies and processes and its results are presented in the publication.

The Physiological Effects Of Precooling Beverage Temperatures On Heat Strain In Collegiate Women Soccer Players, Taylor Welch Nov 2014

The Physiological Effects Of Precooling Beverage Temperatures On Heat Strain In Collegiate Women Soccer Players, Taylor Welch

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Precooling is a method used to decrease initial pre-exercise core temperature in order to facilitate a greater margin for heat production before a maximum core temperature is reached. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in physiological and perceptual effects of precooling using beverages of three different temperatures: room temperature beverage (24.88 ± 1.13°C), cold beverage (6.15 ± 3.16°C) and ice slushy (-1.61 ± 0.45°C) in a hot environment (27.88 ± 0.72°C and 35.36 ± 0.83°C for wet globe bulb temperature and dry bulb temperature respectively). For all trials the environmental temperature was set to 35°C with …

Preventing Childhood Obesity: Strategies To Help Preschoolers Develop Healthy Eating Habits, Brent A. Mcbride, Dipti A. Dev Nov 2014

Preventing Childhood Obesity: Strategies To Help Preschoolers Develop Healthy Eating Habits, Brent A. Mcbride, Dipti A. Dev

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

DURING THE PAST THREE DECADES, childhood obesity rates increased dramatically in the United States. Despite new evidence suggesting a decrease in obesity rates in 2- to 5-year-olds during recent years (Ogden et al. 2014), the prevalence of obesity in this age group remains high and is a major concern for families and early childhood educators alike.

Researchers and policy makers now recognize the critical role of early childhood teachers in shaping children's eating habits through their mealtime interactions with children (Savage, Fisher, & Birch 2007). As a result, local, state, and federal entities have introduced obesity prevention programs in early …

Education Reform And Potemkin Villages: Expanding Conceptions Of “Data”, Noah Asher Golden Nov 2014

Education Reform And Potemkin Villages: Expanding Conceptions Of “Data”, Noah Asher Golden

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"I argue that much of the current education reform movement [uses] reductive notions of data to create the appearance of growth as opposed to authentic and sustainable growth in pedagogical practice and outcomes.

Data tell a story. How we select, manage, organize, and report those data influences the story in two ways: (1) it reveals our values and priorities and (2) it has the power to shape, highlight, and/or obscure the knowledge it purports to share. Software and information systems play a central role here as the logic they rely on to structure and use data saturates educational practice (Lynch)."

Making Room: A Place For Children's Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll Oct 2014

Making Room: A Place For Children's Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll

Heather Ingersoll

A relatively uncharted territory until recently, the concept of children as innate spiritual beings has garnered significant attention among scholars over the past two decades. The more that is learned about children’s spirituality the more apparent it becomes that the Christian church in the United States generally fails to provide sufficient space for children to explore, develop, and share their spirituality. This potentially leads children to suppress or disconnect from their spirituality in later years and also deprives a Christian community of the ability to learn and grow from children’s unique experiences of God and spirituality. This paper examines the …
