Better Health Sciences Collections With Oclc’S Worldcat, Carol Watwood

DLPS Faculty Publications

As the world's largest bibliographic database. OCLC's WorldCat has unique value in identifying materials for building a high-quality health sciences collection. WorldCat on FirstSearch is a valuable addition to the librarian's collection development toolbox to help compensate for the cessation of the Brandon/Hill lists. The database's large size, powerful keyword search feature, currency, and the ability to highlight important information through its interface all contribute to its usefulness in collection development. Several pilot projects and ongoing research in open access, "work-based" record design hold much promise for increased versatility.

Building Kentucky Collections With Worldcat, Carol Watwood

DLPS Faculty Publications

As the world’s largest bibliographic database, OCLC’s WorldCat is well known for its uses in cataloging and interlibrary loans. Less well known is its usefulness and versatility in making day-to-day decisions about collection development. The FirstSearch interface, available throughout Kentucky, is a user-friendly and useful interface for identifying relevant materials for a library’s collection. The prepublication records are helpful as an “early warning” for new publications. Other uses include the identification of state- and subject-specific materials. Also, the links and holdings records can help evaluate appropriateness for particular types of libraries and identify materials of interest. Furthermore, the inclusion of …

Teen Health Web Sites, Carol Watwood Jan 2004

Teen Health Web Sites, Carol Watwood

DLPS Faculty Publications

Teens, like other age groups, often use the World Wide Web to search for health information. The health-related needs and interests of teens differ somewhat from other age groups. Good health Web sites for teens are hard to construct. Health Web sites for older teens may include content inappropriate for some school and library settings. No single site can be recommended overall. The age of users and the setting in which the information is to be used are important considerations.

The Prenatal Use Of Crack Cocaine: How It Affects Children And How Schools Can Respond, Michelle Kirkham

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Crack made its debut in the United States during the late 1980's. No one thought about the enormous impact that one illegal drug could have, but crack has dramatically increased the number of drug addictions in this country. Even more traumatic is that there are many children suffering today from the effects of the crack that their mothers used while pregnant. The oldest crack-exposed children are now approaching school-age. A concern for the educators of our country is that disagreements exist concerning what abilities these children do or do not possess and what can or can not be done for …

Belize Tertiary School Libraries: A Needs-Assessment Survey, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Wright Jan 1990

Belize Tertiary School Libraries: A Needs-Assessment Survey, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Wright

DLPS Faculty Publications

Having come to the end of a ten-year study of Belize developing libraries, the Belize government asked for a survey of all the tertiary school libraries within the country. The government purpose centered around the number and caliber of staff, book/journal collections, student use and adequacy of the facility housing the collections. When adequacy of any of the above failed criteria, they asked for recommendations for improvement within the eleven schools visited. Thanks to the United States Information Agency’s Academic Specialist Award, the study, followed by training workshops, took place from February 3-6, 1990. Text of the entire study follows.
