A Comparison Of The Effects Of Student-Generated Versus Instructor-Generated Questions On The Comprehension Of Written Material, Helen Diann Pratt
Masters Theses
Twelve college students volunteered to participate in a special section of an introductory psychology course at Western Michigan University. A multiple baseline design across groups was used to assess differences in reading comprehension between students who received study objectives written by the instructor and students trained to write their own study objectives. Quizzes and examinations were used to assess students' reading comprehension of course materials. A comparison of pre- and post-test scores on the Nelson-Denny Reading Comprehension Test was used to determine whether students had acquired skills which aided their comprehension of other materials. Subjects were first trained to make change using pennies and then were trained to use each successive denomination in combination with those previously trained. A multipleprobe design was used, including generalization probes of the above-cited skills. Results indicated that each subject acquired the behavior of change computation with coins as a function of the training procedure. Also, …

Drug Addiction In Youth: The High School And College Level, Shirley Anne Percy
Honors Theses
In a world undergoing enormous transitions, where familial and social supports are eroding and established beliefs are gradually being demolished, it is natural that many will try to modify their awareness--to ease the uncertainties of the day, to avoid psychic pain, to achieve pleasure, to find faith. The old gods falter; the old goals seem pointless. What is left but to chemically dull the senses or, alternatively, create new illustions, new utopian worlds? So it has been in every period of stress; so it is today.
Man changes his world enormously but himself minimally. He has created instant news, transportation …

The Mental Hygiene Program, Emil E. Samuelson
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
Education is thought of as a process of adjustment to environment, both social and physical; the most important function of the school, accordingly, is to make boys and girls adjust readily and happily to their social and physical environment. In such aim the mental hygiene program assumes an obvious role, for primarily it consists of ways and means of facilitating the adjustment process.
