The most popular school programs for tobacco and other drug abuse prevention address a variety of substances from tobacco to alcohol to other drugs. It is not uncommon for the same school program to address an even broader range of health and social objectives including exercise and nutrition promotion, pregnancy and HIV prevention, and violence prevention. In this article, the authors address the question of whether it is more effective to target a narrow range of objectives (e.g., smoking prevention) or a wider range of related behaviors (e.g., tobacco, alcohol, and other drug abuse). Alcohol consumption is a problem on almost every college campus. The problem not only affects the drinkers, but also the roommates who have to put up with the behavior, the faculty who try to teach these students, and the support services staff who does what it can to reduce the behavior, or at least its negative effects

An Analysis Of Substance Abusers' Field Dependence & Time Spent In Rehabilitative Therapy, Robert Fane

This project was designed to determine if significant differences existed between the level of psychological differentiation, as determined by the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), of individuals entering a treatment center for chemical dependency and the length of stay at the facility.
The subjects consisted of 43 white males who were seeking treatment for addiction to mood altering chemicals at a regional treatment facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Each subject was interviewed to collect pertinent background information pertaining to past substance abuse and was evaluated to determine psychological differentiation, utilizing the GEFT.

Education is thought of as a process of adjustment to environment, both social and physical; the most important function of the school, accordingly, is to make boys and girls adjust readily and happily to their social and physical environment. In such aim the mental hygiene program assumes an obvious role, for primarily it consists of ways and means of facilitating the adjustment process.
