Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Effective patient education promotes successful postoperative outcomes. Nurses in an outpatient surgery center lacked consistent patient education practices and materials.
Purpose: The purpose of the project was to implement an evidence-based multimodal educational strategy for patients who undergo breast implant surgeries.
Methods: At an outpatient plastic surgery center, pre- and post-intervention phone calls were tracked; post-intervention education, documentation, and patient satisfaction data were recorded. Nurses were educated on the new materials, delivery procedures, and electronic health record (EHR) documentation. All patients undergoing breast implant surgery received multimodal education at each postoperative appointment. Outcomes included (1) the number of patient …
Patient Portal Use And Patient Education Materials Access Among Mississippi Adult Residents, Anna K. Swann
Patient Portal Use And Patient Education Materials Access Among Mississippi Adult Residents, Anna K. Swann
Dissertations
Patient education plays a vital role in improving the health outcomes of patients with chronic diseases and helps prevent illness in otherwise healthy individuals. Patient portals allow patients to access their EHRs, communicate with their healthcare providers, and access patient education materials. Despite the potential for patient portals and education materials to improve health outcomes, many barriers prevent patients from utilizing them. Uneducated patients are more likely to participate in risky health behaviors, which leads to poor health outcomes. Poor health outcomes lead to higher medical costs. Mississippi has a high rate of chronic diseases. Suppose the barriers to patient …
Experiences Of Mechanical Circulatory Support Patients With Primary Implant Education, Dawn Michelle Christensen
Experiences Of Mechanical Circulatory Support Patients With Primary Implant Education, Dawn Michelle Christensen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Advancement in mechanical circulatory support (MCS) device therapy has led to increased use in heart failure therapy and relies on optimized patient education for successful support. The purpose of this 3-manuscript study, guided by the Husserlian transcendental phenomenological method, was to explore the lived experiences of (a) patients with primary mechanical circulatory support education (PMCSE), (b) patients who undergo unplanned MCS implantation with PMCSE, and (c) patients who undergo planned MCS implantation with PMCSE. Eleven participants were recruited (eight planned, three unplanned) from MCS targeted social media sites and interviewed using a semistructured open-ended question format. Data were analyzed using …
Exploring Education Needs For Heart Failure Patients' Transition Of Care To Home, Michelle D. Williams
Exploring Education Needs For Heart Failure Patients' Transition Of Care To Home, Michelle D. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Transitions of care is a model designed to ensure that patients have resources needed to assist them to care for themselves at home after hospital discharge, which helps to decrease preventable adverse events. For people with heart failure (HF) to transition home from the hospital successfully, specific education is needed that is individualized to the disease process, but most patients' educational needs after discharge are unmet. The purpose of this qualitative study, guided by the Meleis middle range theory of transition, was to explore the perspectives of people with HF about their educational needs in order to gather data that …

Developing The Rehabilitation Education For Caregivers And Patients (Recap) Model: Application To Physical Therapy In Stroke Rehabilitation, Megan M. Danzl
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Patient and caregiver education is recognized as a critical component of stroke rehabilitation and physical therapy practice yet the informational needs of stroke survivors and caregivers are largely unmet and optimal educational interventions need to be established. The objective of this dissertation was to develop a theory and model of “Rehabilitation Education for Caregivers and Patients” (RECAP) in the context of physical therapy and stroke rehabilitation, grounded in the experiences and perceptions of stroke survivors, their caregivers, and physical therapists.
Qualitative research methods with a novel grounded theory approach were used. Potential constructs of RECAP were identified from existing research. …
