Effects Of Transformational Learning On Student Nurses' Perceptions And Attitudes Of Caring For Dying Patients, Kristina Mccall Jan 2018

Effects Of Transformational Learning On Student Nurses' Perceptions And Attitudes Of Caring For Dying Patients, Kristina Mccall

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nurses spend more time with patients than members of any other discipline in the hospital setting, and most nurses will provide care for dying patients. However, nurses tend to feel uncomfortable providing care to dying patients, which may be due to a lack of education and knowledge about care for dying patients. The purpose of this quasiexperimental 1-group pretest-posttest study was to determine the effect education had on nursing students' attitudes and perceptions about the care they give to their patients at the end of life. The End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) education modules were used for quality …

Use Of Simulation For Tracheostomy Care, A Low Volume, High Risk Nursing Procedure, Vijaya Ramakrishnan Jan 2018

Use Of Simulation For Tracheostomy Care, A Low Volume, High Risk Nursing Procedure, Vijaya Ramakrishnan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Often, education regarding low volume and high-risk procedures, like tracheostomy, are ignored. Lack of experience, skills, and human resources can lead to decreases in confidence levels, diminished quality of care, and potentially an adverse event. The purpose of this DNP project was to prepare simulation-based education on the tracheostomy procedure and provide hands-on education to bedside nurses. The project answered the question: To what extent will a simulation-based teaching method adequately prepare staff nurses in a post-acute surgical unit to perform this high risk low volume procedure? The Johns Hopkins evidence-based model method was used to assist in translation of …

A Diabetic Child's Impact On An African American Family, Silvanus Okeke Jan 2018

A Diabetic Child's Impact On An African American Family, Silvanus Okeke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Diabetes, a chronic disease with devastating but preventable consequences, is common in the United States, especially within African American communities. Earlier research has indicated that 21.7% of African American parents have children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the Mississippi Delta Region. Researchers have examined coping, stress, and behaviors of African American parents of children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes; however, there is a gap in literature regarding how African American parents can cope with stress and how changes in health behavior due to Type 1 diabetes impact African American families. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to …

Reducing Lateral Violence Among Nurses Through Staff Education, Alexandra Lindsay Tripp Jan 2018

Reducing Lateral Violence Among Nurses Through Staff Education, Alexandra Lindsay Tripp

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Most nurses experience lateral violence (LV) during their careers. LV can be detrimental to nurses' livelihoods and careers, to facilities due to nurse replacement costs, to the nursing profession due to attrition, and to patient safety. The purpose of this staff education project was to educate registered nurses on the issue of LV and to equip nurses to respond to their aggressors. The project question addressed whether education would increase awareness of LV and empower nurses to stand up to their aggressors. The theory of the nurse as the wounded healer, social learning theory, and the theory of reciprocal determinism …

Preparing Novice Nurses For Early Recognition Acute Deterioration, Norma Patricia Harris Jan 2018

Preparing Novice Nurses For Early Recognition Acute Deterioration, Norma Patricia Harris

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hospitalized patients increasingly present with complex health issues that place them at risk for acute patient deterioration (APD). Novice nurses are ill-equipped with the critical clinical skills to function competently in recognizing APD, placing patients at risk for negative health outcomes. This project addressed the need to educate novice nurses to recognize APD and answered the project focused questions that asked if an educational intervention with high-fidelity simulation (HFS) would improve nurse knowledge and clinical confidence in recognizing APD. Benner's novice-to-expert and the constructivism theory were used to guide the project. Based upon a review of the literature, the HFS …

Educational Outcomes Of Online Registered Nursing To Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Students, Shuba Samuel Jan 2018

Educational Outcomes Of Online Registered Nursing To Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Students, Shuba Samuel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The projected nurse workforce shortage and the need for nurses with bachelor's degree has increased the number of accelerated and online programs in nursing education. The evolving healthcare system demands registered nurses (RNs) to demonstrate critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice in varied healthcare settings. The purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze if academic variables, such as preadmission grade point average (GPA), predicted evidence-based skills and research utilization skills among students enrolled in the online RN to Bachelor of Science in nursing program. The theoretical foundations of this study was comprised of Knowles's adult learning theory, Benner's stages …

Educating Staff Members In An Outpatient Clinic On Hypertension Management, Helen Anyiam Jan 2018

Educating Staff Members In An Outpatient Clinic On Hypertension Management, Helen Anyiam

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

An educational module on hypertension was created in response to the recurring pattern of patient visits with hypertension and an observed knowledge gap among nursing staff in an outpatient clinic located in the southern United States. The educational module was patterned after Joint National Committee-8 and American College of Cardiology guidelines involving patient lifestyle modification and provided clinic staff with information on hypertension diagnosis and self-management for use in patient education. The module was reviewed by a panel of 3 experts who approved it for appropriateness and clarity of content and made one minor recommendation for revision. The education materials …

Progression Of Clinical Self-Efficacy Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Christine Lee Hamilton Jan 2018

Progression Of Clinical Self-Efficacy Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Christine Lee Hamilton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Clinical self-efficacy, or the confidence that nursing students have in their ability to successfully perform nursing clinical skills, is imperative for the safe and effective practice of nursing. A gap in knowledge exists about the change in clinical self-efficacy as baccalaureate nursing (BSN) students move through a nursing program, in which they learn and practice clinical skills in laboratory and clinical settings. Guided by Bandura's social cognitive theory, the purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the relationship between clinical experience within a nursing program and the reported clinical self-efficacy of BSN students in the sophomore, junior, and senior …

Predicting The Nclex-Rn Pass Rate At An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Dawne Devoe Olbrych Jan 2018

Predicting The Nclex-Rn Pass Rate At An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Dawne Devoe Olbrych

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) first-time pass rate for an associate degree in nursing (ADN) program was below the national mean, presenting a problem for graduates who failed the NCLEX-RN and could not enter the workforce as registered nurses. Knowles's assumptions of adult learning, Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve, and Zull's neuroscience research served as the theoretical frameworks for this study. The purpose of this study was to identify which academic and time-lapse variables predict the graduate's first-time passage for the NCLEX-RN. Archived academic records and NCLEX-RN results for all 786 graduates from one ADN program who took …

Nurse Practitioners' Experiences With Role Transition: Supporting The Learning Curve Through Preceptorship, Viktoriya Y. Pleshkan Jan 2018

Nurse Practitioners' Experiences With Role Transition: Supporting The Learning Curve Through Preceptorship, Viktoriya Y. Pleshkan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The nurse practitioner (NP) role transition is difficult and ill-supported before and after graduation. Although preceptorships are essential in supporting a NP's role transition, there is a paucity of data on student and novice NPs' experiences with their role transition and how it is supported through preceptorships. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand and describe the meaning of NPs' role transition experiences while in a preceptorship before and after graduation. Schlossberg's transition theory and the cognitive apprenticeship models were used to guide the exploration of concepts of role transition and preceptorship. One face-to-face, 3 Skype, and …
