The Evolution Of College Health: A Story Of Education For Justice, Raymond Quirolgico

Raymond Quirolgico

Health has gained prominence in the public consciousness as a matter of security and equity. Therefore the need for the health promotion profession to orient itself in terms of social justice and not simply biomedical diagnostics is critical. This session will weave together a personal narrative of transitional journeys with original research about ACHA’s organizational evolution and cross-disciplinary theories and institutionally relevant practices to highlight the challenge of public health in this modern leadership context.

The Biology Of Reality Testing - Implications For Cognitive Education, Neil Greenberg Jan 2010

The Biology Of Reality Testing - Implications For Cognitive Education, Neil Greenberg

Neil Greenberg

• This report explores the proposition that teaching effectiveness can be enhanced by accommodating the key differences between two complementary and deeply engrained modes of reality testing, each predominantly centered in different hemispheres of the brain. • (1) Correspondence involves “reality-testing” of a percept, the cerebral representation of an experience in the world. • (2) Coherence involves “textualizing”, that is, reality-testing of a percept by how easily it relates to previous and ongoing parallel and collateral experiences. • Confidence in the validity of any percept throughout development is related to the interplay of these key processes. • As organisms develop, …

Factors Influencing The Nurse Faculty Shortage: A Case Study, Therese M. Mendez

Therese M Mendez

The nursing workforce is aging along with the rest of the American population. In 2012, RNs in their 50's will be the largest age group in the nursing workforce. Who will replace them?

New nurses come from nursing schools. Nursing schools have a steady number of applicants. However, thousands of qualified nursing school applicants are turned away. One reason for denying admission is an inadequate number of nursing faculty to support the number of qualified nursing school applicants.

This case study focuses on some of the issues faced by new faculty in a large university setting in the the Southern …

Tangible symbols are objects or partial objects with qualities, such as shape, texture, and consistency, that can be used to represent a person, place, object, activity, or concept. They can be handled and share a perceptual relationship with what they represent, known as the referent. This article presents a study on the development of a universal tangible symbol system. The purpose of this study was to identify a set of standardized tangible symbols from which educational teams could select the most appropriate symbols for the children they serve.

Preparing Law Students For Disappointing Exam Results: Lessons From "Casey At The Bat", Grant H. Morris Jun 2008

Preparing Law Students For Disappointing Exam Results: Lessons From "Casey At The Bat", Grant H. Morris

Grant H Morris

It is a statistical fact of life that two-thirds of the law students who enter law school will not graduate in the upper one-third of their law school class. Typically, those students are disappointed in their examination grade results and in their class standing. Nowhere does this disappointment manifest itself more than in their attitude toward their classes. As students begin law school, they are eager, excited, and willing to participate in class discussion. But after they receive their first semester grade results, many students withdraw from the learning process; they are depressed and disengaged. They suffer a significant loss …

Terminology management is a hot topic these days. At the tcworld conference 2006, terminology had its own forum with hundreds of participants. Disciplining Words: What You Always Wanted To Know About Terminology Management, Uwe Muegge Jan 2007

Disciplining Words: What You Always Wanted To Know About Terminology Management, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Terminology management enables organizations of any size to use the same terms consistently within and across the communication types that accompany a product or service. Typical communication types include specifications, drawings, GUI, software strings, help systems, technical documentation, marketing materials, regulatory submissions, etc. As multiple authors typically contribute to these communications, terminology management is the most efficient solution for ensuring that the organization speaks with one voice.

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz Jan 2001

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Is the family subject to principles of justice? In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls includes the (monogamous) family along with the market and the government as among the "basic institutions of society" to which principles of justice apply. Justice, he famously insists, is primary in politics as truth is in science: the only excuse for tolerating injustice is that no lesser injustice is possible. The point of the present paper is that Rawls doesn't actually mean this. When it comes to the family, and in particular its impact on fair equal opportunity (the first part of the the Difference …

Technical texts, i.e., technical literature proper (data sheets, user documentation, scientific publications, etc.), as well as the whole range of medical and legal texts, have one feature in common: Their authors make generous use of: a) words not in common usage, e.g., dongle (a computer hardware device that prevents unauthorized use of protected software); and/or b) words that are in common usage but have a slightly, or even totally, different meaning in the special language, e.g., bug (in the general sense, this means a small insect, but in the computer software field, this is a small defect in the code …
