The Use Of Animals In Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, & Recommendations, Jonathan Balcombe
The Use Of Animals In Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, & Recommendations, Jonathan Balcombe
eBooks
Despite recent advances in technology and increasing societal concern for animals, animals continue to be exploited and killed in large numbers so that students can learn about their structure and function. Dissection may not be without its merits from an educational standpoint, if well implemented, but it appears from student surveys that it usually is not. When one considers the associated costs—animal suffering and death in the supply trade, disruption of wild animal populations, messages that tend to undermine rather than reinforce respect for life and concern for others, rising costs of animal carcasses (as compared with alternatives with longer …
Terminology Work: Tools And Processes That Make A Difference, Uwe Muegge
Terminology Work: Tools And Processes That Make A Difference, Uwe Muegge
Uwe Muegge
Technical texts, i.e., technical literature proper (data sheets, user documentation, scientific publications, etc.), as well as the whole range of medical and legal texts, have one feature in common: Their authors make generous use of: a) words not in common usage, e.g., dongle (a computer hardware device that prevents unauthorized use of protected software); and/or b) words that are in common usage but have a slightly, or even totally, different meaning in the special language, e.g., bug (in the general sense, this means a small insect, but in the computer software field, this is a small defect in the code …
The Difference In Pain Tolerance Between Ncaa Division 1-A Male And Female Athletes, Mollie K. Karabatsos
The Difference In Pain Tolerance Between Ncaa Division 1-A Male And Female Athletes, Mollie K. Karabatsos
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
How well an athlete tolerates pain may aid the athletic trainer in determining a proper rehabilitation protocol for the quickest recovery and return to play after an injury. The present investigation was conducted to determine if there is a difference in pain tolerance between NCAA Division I-A male and female athletes. The subjects consisted of nineteen healthy Division I-A male athletes and nineteen healthy Division I-A female athletes all between the ages of 18 and 23 (N=38). The subjects placed their hand, up to their styloid process, into a one - degree Celsius ice bath for one minute. After one …
Distribution And Habitat Of The Southern Two-Lined Salamander, Eurycea Cirrigera, In Will County, Illinois: Implications For Population Management And Monitoring, David Mauger, Timothy Bell, Eric L. Peters
Distribution And Habitat Of The Southern Two-Lined Salamander, Eurycea Cirrigera, In Will County, Illinois: Implications For Population Management And Monitoring, David Mauger, Timothy Bell, Eric L. Peters
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The southern two-lined salamander (Eurycea cirrigera) was found to occur at numerous localities within the Kankakee River State Park in Will County, Illinois. The species is restricted to small drainages within the Kankakee River valley that have flow consisting of groundwater that discharges at seeps or springs at or within the valley bluff. Cooler water temperatures and possibly other conditions that are associated with water derived from seep or spring sources may be important factors in determining salamander abundance. This is particularly relevant to larval habitat. These observations suggest that the spring or seep-fed larval habitat may be the primary …
Revitalization Of Ephemeral Pools As Frog Breeding Habitat In An Illinois Forest Preserve, Denins Nyberg, Irene Lerner
Revitalization Of Ephemeral Pools As Frog Breeding Habitat In An Illinois Forest Preserve, Denins Nyberg, Irene Lerner
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Almost all land in the eastern United States that has been acquired to preserve nature was once in agricultural usage, and because of this, alterations of ephemeral pool hydrology are common in forest preserves and parks. These ephemeral pools are an important breeding resource for many amphibian species. We hypothesized that filling drainage ditches and recreating a more natural topography at eroded berms would enhance amphibian populations in the forest preserve. Restoration of the hydrology was begun by volunteers in 1993 and was associated with management to reduce non-native woody vegetation. Three ephemeral pools have had maximum water levels raised …
Statement Of The Position Of The Iowa Academy Of Science On The Validity Of Evolutionary Science And On The Status Of Creationism As A Scientific Explanation Of Natural Phenomena
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Current attempts to introduce "scientific creationism", "creationism", or the Judeo-Christian biblical account of creation, as well as to reframe the discussion around terms such as "abrupt appearance theory", "intelligent design theory", or other disguised forms of creationism into the science classroom along with or instead of evolutionary science are strongly opposed by The Iowa Academy of Science on the grounds that creationism, in whatever form, is a religious doctrine and not science.

Information and interesting facts about the plant, including uses by aborigines and early settlers, follows.
Herbicide Resistant Weeds, Alex R. Martin, Fred W. Roeth, Chad Lee
Herbicide Resistant Weeds, Alex R. Martin, Fred W. Roeth, Chad Lee
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The development of herbicide resistant weeds is described along with strategies to prevent development. Herbicide resistance refers to plants within a weed species that, after repeated use of a herbicide, are no longer controlled by normal rates of that herbicide. Herbicide resistance often develops in fields that have been sprayed with herbicides with the same site of action for several years. Herbicide resistance is usually attributed to slight genetic differences between resistant and susceptible plants. These changes occur at a frequency of one plant in a million or even a billion. Herbicide resistance is not dependent on the environment or …

Nf422 Sunflower Head Moth Management, Ronald C. Seymour, Gary L. Hein, Ray Weed
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Sunflower head moth identification and biology, management, and chemical control.
Sunflower head moth, Homoeosoma electellum (Hulst), can cause substantial economic loss to commercial sunflowers in Nebraska and the surrounding region. Populations of sunflower head moth vary tremendously from year to year. Consequently, pest monitoring is important each growing season to determine when moths first appear and the extent of the infestation. Field scouting in confection sunflower fields is critical because of their higher value and the importance of maintaining quality.
Topics include sunflower head moth identification and biology, management, and chemical control.

G00-1404 Radon In Nebraska Homes: Healthy Indoor Air For Healtlhy Nebraskans (Revised October 2003), Rebecca L. Versch, Shirley Niemeyer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas emitted from uranium, a naturally occurring mineral in rocks and soil. Normally, radon rises up through the soil and then dissipates in the air outside. Radon becomes a concern, however, when it seeps in through openings such as cracks, loose-fitting pipes, sump pits, dirt floors, slab joints, or block walls and accumulates in the home.
This publication will help householders understand radon — what it is, its effect on heatlh, how to test for it, and some remodeling or new building techniques that can reduce radon levels in the home.
Nf00-411 Seed Treatment Fungicides For Soybeans (Revised January 2004), Loren J. Giesler
Nf00-411 Seed Treatment Fungicides For Soybeans (Revised January 2004), Loren J. Giesler
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The most common soybean disease problem in Nebraska is seedling damping off and seed rot caused by several fungi. Early season damping off and root rots are often followed by premature death, which in many instances may be attributed to fungal infections earlier in the season.
This NebFact discusses the seed treatment fungicides for soybeans. These includes protectants (contacts) that are effective only on the seed surface; and systemic fungicides that are absorbed by the emerging seedling, which inhibit or kill the fungus inside host plant tissues.

Ec00-1564 A Guide To Identifying Nebraska Bumble Bee Species, Marion D. Ellis, Doug Golick
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
For more people, pollen means allergies and bees mean stings. However, you should thank a bee, butterfly, bat, bird, or other pollinator for one out of every three bites of food you eat. There are 95 crops grown in the United States that require insect pollinators. In addition, many bee-pollinated plants provide food for wildlife, increase soil fertility, and beautify our landscapes.
This extension circular discusses the importance of bees, capturing bees, making a reference collection, identification guide, and glossary.

Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack
Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Sorghum is grown throughout Nebraska on approximately 0.6 million acres of land. It is grown as a forage crop as well as a grain crop. There is no significant commercial seed production in Nebraska. Grain sorghum is used domestically as livestock feed, in ethanol production, and to a limited extent as a food crop.
Grain sorghum is also exported to several countries. All sorghum hybrids (grain and forage) are susceptible to ergot disease. Ergot is a disease that impacts sorghum production directly by infecting unfertilized flowers and preventing seed development. Ergot also impacts sorghum production indirectly. Affected fields with honeydew-covered …
