In Fall of 2022, UGA Libraries Faculty conducted IL instruction for hundreds of undergraduate First-Year Odyssey students. As part of this required course, library faculty are faced with the challenge of conducting workshop-style instruction through a one-shot format, focusing on both integral library skills and how to interpret a research article. R&I Librarian, Jessica Varsa worked with Dr. Justin Ingels, Public Health faculty, to develop a lesson plan on reviewing and interpreting academic journal articles through the lens of the ACRL’s’ Framework that embraces active learning strategies.

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
For a variety of reasons, some graduate students ultimately determine that they would like to pursue a career outside of the ivory tower. At the same time, these scholars may be uncertain about how to translate their expertise into a nonacademic position. At Cornell University, a partnership between the Management Library and the Careers Beyond Academia office has allowed librarians to utilize their unique expertise to assist graduate students throughout their job search.

Writing and publishing are essential activities for young researchers, yet many newly arrived graduate students struggle to learn both foundational writing skills and the knowledge necessary to navigate an increasingly complex publishing landscape. To help students make informed decisions through their writing publishing journey, science and engineering librarians at Duke University Libraries partnered with the Pratt School of Engineering in summer 2019 to organize a series of workshops on the publishing life cycle for STEM graduate students.
