Athletic Voices And Academic Victories: African American Male Student-Athlete Experiences In The Pac-Ten, Keith Harrison May 2010

Athletic Voices And Academic Victories: African American Male Student-Athlete Experiences In The Pac-Ten, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The purpose of this study was to explore participants’ academic experiences and confidence about their academic achievement. Participants (N = 27) consisted of high-achieving African American male student—athletes from four academically rigorous American universities in the Pac-Ten conference. Most of the participants competed in revenue-generating sports and were interviewed to obtain a deeper understanding of their successful academic experiences. Utilizing a phenomenological approach four major themes emerged: “I Had to Prove I’m Worthy,” “I’m a Perceived Threat to Society,” “It’s About Time Management,” and “It’s About Pride and Hard Work.” Stereotype threat and stereotype reactance are investigated in relation to …

The Educational Pipeline To Law School—Too Broken And Too Narrow To Provide Diversity, Sarah E. Redfield May 2010

The Educational Pipeline To Law School—Too Broken And Too Narrow To Provide Diversity, Sarah E. Redfield

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The legal profession remains markedly out of sync with the changing demographics of the country, where the population is projected to be over 50 percent minority by 2050. Against this trend, law school enrollment hovers around 20 percent minority, including over 7 percent Asian students. Enrollment of some minority groups shows a decline rather than improvement. These numbers will remain static or continue to decline if the profession does not pay far more serious attention to the current leaks and gaps along the educational pipeline, far before students seek admission at the law school gates.”

Proceedings Of The 2009 Nrc Federal Facilities Council/James Madison University Symposium On Protecting Large Facility Complexes;, George H. Baker, Cheryl E. Wilkins

George H Baker

Large, complex facilities pose unique protection challenges involving multidisciplinary expertise and collaboration among government, academia, and the private sector. The symposium served as a forum for sharing experiences in dealing with large facility catastrophic events and risk management. The symposium was organized based on the value of interaction among different people representing diverse disciplines. In many instances, such interactions lead to solutions that would not have been developed within disciplinary stovepipes. The venue was divided into three panels addressing physical security, cyber security, and real facility case studies. We were also privileged to have three keynote speakers including Dr. Charles …

National Standards: Following The Pendulum Of Debate, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter Apr 2010

National Standards: Following The Pendulum Of Debate, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

In March, the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) released drafts of the proposed National Standards for K-12 education in English Language Arts and Literacy, History/Social Studies, Science, and Math. The draft standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts with the goal of providing a clear and consistent framework to develop “college or career ready” students. In this draft, the authors attempt to define knowledge and skills students that high school graduates need for entry-level, credit bearing academic college courses and workforce training programs.

How Did Arkansas Fare In The Race To The Top?, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

In late March, the winners for Round 1 of the federal Race to the Top (RttT) were announced. The competitive grant funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment (ARRA) was described in more detail in an OEP policy brief posted here . In January, Arkansas joined 40 other states in submitting an application. When the finalists were announced, Arkansas was ranked 17th and just missed the cut! In this policy brief, we provide a brief overview of how the Arkansas application fared and what our state leaders could do to increase our chances for Round Two.

Reauthorizing No Child Left Behind: The Obama Blueprint, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

Almost 45 years ago to this day, the federal government enacted the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) on April 11, 1965. The Act, which provided funds for professional development, instructional materials, resources to support educational programs, and promoted parental involvement in primary and secondary education, has been reauthorized about every five years since its enactment. The current version, known more commonly as the No Child Left Behind Act, is now up for reauthorization. The following policy brief will describe the development of the Act into its current form, discuss the major components of No Child Left Behind, and highlight …

2009 Naep Reading Results, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter Apr 2010

2009 Naep Reading Results, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as “the Nation’s Report Card,” is a national assessment of what students in each state know in various subjects. The grade 4 and 8 mathematics and reading portions of the NAEP were administered in 2009. We highlighted the math results, which were released last fall, in the 2009 Arkansas Report Card (http://www.uark.edu/ua/oep/report_cards/2009_Report Card.pdf). The 2009 reading scores were released at the end of March, 2010. This policy brief highlights the recent NAEP reading results and demonstrates, bluntly, that growth has stagnated both in the U.S. and Arkansas.

Polarisations In The World-System, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The project led by Immanuel Wallerstein’s which is re-examining various aspects/dimensions of polarisations over the last 500 years is a fascinating and ambitious project: ten aspects of the transformations/trends over this long period were chosen in order to examine how matters have been transformed during this time in the core, semi-periphery and periphery of the world-system. The broad themes are the following: wealth; deruralization; urbanization; state power; citizenship’; enterprises; ecology; gender; cultural practices and deviance. Not all papers are so far at the same level of advancement but they will promise to be so in a year’s time.

This is a paper which consists of extracts from a draft paper co-authored by Ari Sitas, Sumangala Damodaran, Wiebke Keim and Nicos Trimikliniotis. The draft is 81 pages long but I have included here only a 7 page long document. It will take at least two forms: a short part 6000 words for the book edited by Immanuel Wallerstein in Polarisations in the World-system and a full-fledged co-authored book. The cluster Gauging the Cycles of Deviance is headed by Ari Sitas for the proposes of the project on Polarisations led by Immanuel Wallerstein: the idea us to re-examine various aspects/dimensions …

An Analysis Of First Amendment Jurisprudence On The Supreme Court Case Of Locke V. Davey, Alexander John Herzog

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Scholarship programs authored by state legislatures may conflict with a state's constitution. In the case of Locke v. Davey 540 U.S. 807 (2003), Joshua Davey challenged the State of Washington's withdrawal of his Promise Scholarship claiming violation of his First Amendment rights under the United States Constitution.

This study is a historical case study analyzing the Supreme Court jurisprudence regarding legal issues concerning the issuance of state funded scholarships for the purpose of religious studies. A complete legal study was conducted that included a review of all relevant court cases, court filings, legal journals and legal briefs.

A micro legal …

Marketing To Entrepreneurs, Site Selectors And Relocation Professionals: An Action Plan For Community Economic Development, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Aaron Mcknight, Megan Polak

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

Community officials offer an array of incentives to stimulate local business growth, unaware of the salient criteria that determine location decisions. An analysis of proprietary research reports and site selector feasibility studies indicates specific criteria that are universally evaluated, nine of which undermine economic development initiatives. An ‘ACTION’ plan is provided to assist city planners’ efforts in appealing to site selection professionals.

The New Millennium And Online Counseling: Ecological Practice, Concerns And Discussion, Oscar T. Mcknight

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

For counselors, the ecosystem is vast and encompassing; and professionals must understand the client in both context and time. This in and of itself is a daunting task; now, enter the New Millennium and on-line counseling. The Web is the poster child of interconnectivedness and interdependence of systems; however, is the Web bringing us closer or further apart? The Web is transforming society and potentially the ecological context of counseling. A review is necessary.

Getting Foothold In Politics, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

The 73rd and 74th Amendments in the Constitution of India made one million Indian women “elected representatives” in the rural and urban local self government bodies by granting 33% reserved seats in Panchayati Raj Institutions in 1992. During last 16 years, many grassroots activists of the women’s movement have plunged in electoral politics for empowerment of women in their constituency. But when it comes to women’s reservation in legislature and parliament of India, we witness tremendous resistance from the patriarchs. For the first time, the Bill providing 33% reservation to women was introduced on 4 September 1996 known as 81st …

Sex Determination And Sex Pre-Selection Tests In India By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

countries are undergoing a demographic transition resulting from a combination of low death and birth rates in their populations. This could be partly due to the vigorous promotion of small families by governments in South Asia and Southeast Asia. India adopted the two-child policy in 2004 while China, since 1978, has strictly implemented the “one child per family” policy. Historically, most Asian countries have had a strong preference for sons. This essay examines the gender, sociocultural and demographic implications of the deficit of women and the role of new reproductive technologies, with a focus on sex determination (SD) and sex …
