Weatherford City Sales Tax Proposal

It is hard to believe, but it has been nearly 10 years since the citizens of the City of Weatherford approved an extension of a one-penny sales tax to benefit the community. As you may recall, a portion of that revenue ($7 million) went to assist in the construction of the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.

Currently, the City is considering a renewal of that sales tax for future community projects. SWOSU has asked to be included in the upcoming proposal. We are currently entertaining and contemplating suggestions for an institutional project. Keep in mind that …

Employer Reports Of Skills Gaps In The Workforce, Samantha K. Mosier, Samantha Kristine Kaiser

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Skills gaps in the workforce are a common conversation in the current value proposition of higher education. Colleges are expected to help students prepare for a world-class workforce while maintaining the integrity of the academic mission. Employers have similar but different opinions on the preparation of college graduates. This exploratory study took an in-depth look at the perceptions of sixteen employers in a region of the Midwest on questions about the perception of hiring managers about the skills gap in the workforce. Questions focused on work readiness, common challenges, and opportunities that exist to combat these hiring challenges. The themes …

Leading, Energizing, And Developing Staff Through Times Of Change, Carol A. Watson, June Liebert, Jane Sánchez, Austin Martin Williams

Presentations

The nature of library work is changing. New technology, user preferences, tighter budgets, and new expectations have meant that libraries have altered and adapted the way they provide resources and services. While these changes have brought many benefits to library users, innovations in how libraries provide resources and services often have long-term implications on the skills needed from librarians and staff. Now more than ever, it's important to communicate to staff about the future of their work and their roles in the library, and to provide them with the development and training they need to transition into new roles. "Where …

Institutional Adoption And Implementation Of A Mandated Community College First Year Experience Course, Carmen Varney Purpus Jul 2019

Institutional Adoption And Implementation Of A Mandated Community College First Year Experience Course, Carmen Varney Purpus

Dissertations

This purpose of the research study is two-fold. The first aim is to establish strategies that can guide community colleges interested in the implementation of a mandated First Year Experience course as well as to identify barriers community colleges may encounter to help them move from desiring a mandated student success course to acting to create one. It is widely believed that student success course helps students learn to be successful, but it is not a widely accepted practice to mandate it for all students.

The second objective is to add to the limited body of research. A nonexperimental descriptive …

The Game As An Instrument Of Honors Students’ Personal Development In The Sibfu Honors College, Maria V. Tarasova

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Honors colleges often serve as laboratories for pedagogical innovation, where new learning strategies and technologies are created both in the sphere of honors education and in the broader context of universities. This study describes a method of “organizational activity games” (OAG) introduced in the honors college of Siberian Federal University (SibFU) in Russia. The author explores the advantages of the game method for reaching the goal of honors students’ personal development. The theory and history of the game, invented in the Russian school of methodology by G. P. Shchedrovitskii, is explored in its relation to the theoretical principles of honors …

Editor’S Introduction, Ada Long

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The last issue of JNCHC (spring/summer 2019) included a Forum on “Current Challenges to Honors Education.” The essays focused on challenges to honors while this issue’s Forum addresses challenges within honors, especially the challenges we present to our students in courses that are designed to complicate, interrogate, and often defy accepted practices and beliefs. The introduction of risk-taking takes this topic beyond the unthreatening and inviting terrain of challenge into a different territory. Virtually all honors programs and colleges advertise themselves as presenting challenges to their students, but few if any boast that they are risky. Jumping hurdles is a …

Cultivating A Community Of Resilience For Transgender Collegians Through The Practice Of Sustainable Leadership, Beau Gilbert Jun 2019

Cultivating A Community Of Resilience For Transgender Collegians Through The Practice Of Sustainable Leadership, Beau Gilbert

Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers

Transgender students have always existed in communities of higher education yet are just now beginning to be acknowledged and included within the context of academia. This has primarily led to the development of campus resource centers intended to protect these students and provide safe spaces on campus. While this is a crucial support system for universities to provide, the framework described herein envisions a future where transgender students can practice resilience and feel a sense of belonging anywhere within their college community. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, this paper highlights the need for a sustainable and campus-wide approach …

How Do We Increase Educator’S Engagement With Learning Management Systems In Higher Education?, Abby Al-Takriti Jun 2019

How Do We Increase Educator’S Engagement With Learning Management Systems In Higher Education?, Abby Al-Takriti

Education Presentations

Abstract

As a former Faculty Assistant at Ivey Business School, I contributed directly to research, theory, case study development, while working alongside practitioners in management. I supported several faculty members, delivering quality education across several high-profile business programs. In this paper, I will outline a Problem of Practice (PoP) within academia and discuss its delineation and associated solutions. The following definition of PoP is used: “A problem of practice is a persistent, contextualized, and specific issue embedded in the work of a professional practitioner, the addressing of which the potential to result in has improved understanding, experience, and outcomes.” (CPED, …

Latinidad In The College Union: Perspectives Of Latinx Staff Members, Naomi Rodriguez Jun 2019

Latinidad In The College Union: Perspectives Of Latinx Staff Members, Naomi Rodriguez

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Latinx students represent a consistently growing and significant population of college going students, though rates for successful graduation vary greatly (Nichols, 2017). Theories of student persistence indicate that student who are actively involved in their college campuses and develop a sense of sense of belonging are likelier to persist to graduation (Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Tinto, 1975). While research seeks to understand how Latinx navigate and succeed in post-secondary environments, barriers continue to pervade in their cumulative environments (Franklin, 2016; Friesen, 2018; Gloria, Delgado-Guerrero, Salazar, Nieves, Mejia & Martinez, 2016). College unions, as a functional part of the college environment, …

Critical Discourse Analysis And Critical Qualitative Inquiry: Data Analysis Strategies For Enhanced Understanding Of Inference And Meaning, Mary Ziskin May 2019

Critical Discourse Analysis And Critical Qualitative Inquiry: Data Analysis Strategies For Enhanced Understanding Of Inference And Meaning, Mary Ziskin

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

This manuscript describes an approach to critical qualitative data analysis that combines (1) Carspecken’s critical qualitative methodological framework (1996; 2012) with (2) the conceptual resources of critical discourse analysis (CDA), as framed by Fairclough (2003, 2016) and colleagues (Chouliaraki & Fairclough, 1999; Fairclough & Wodak, 1997). Carspecken’s methodological theory illuminates the connection between sociopolitical power and culture by introducing the content of validity claims into analysis of discourse. In turn, CDA helps to support the analysis of validity claims in that these are often expressed or legitimated through implicit references, and through the rhetoric, shape, or tone of what is …
