As library budgets are cut or remain flat, librarians asked to do more with less are considering diverse data to investigate how best to invest limited funds. The data available to librarians are extensive but they may also be contradictory. In this presentation, we contextualize findings from interviews conducted with Illinois State University faculty with institutional and collections data. Using the words of faculty members across disciplines, we highlight some of the tensions around discovery and access to scholarly literature, perceptions of urgency, and engagement with open access. Despite its capacity to reach readers irrespective of affiliation or geographic location, conversations about Open Access (OA) frequently center academic stakeholders in high-income countries. This presentation will examine opportunities for technical services librarians to explore with students some of the inequities of the scholarly communications landscape, including various approaches to and aspects of OA, and to consider the disparate levels of access available to individuals based on institutional affiliation. This study explored lived experiences of Somali immigrant students as they studied at a community college in Minnesota. Although, many Somalis are pursuing educational opportunities in MN community colleges. Little research is available on their community college experiences. The aim of this study was to extend the limited research on Somali immigrant students by providing valuable information regarding their community college experiences. A qualitative study design with a phenomenological approach was employed to examine the lived experiences of six students who participated in semi-structured focus group and individual interviews. To assist with creating a more equitable journal negotiations landscape, Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) created the Journal Negotiation Community of Practice. SPARC’s role is focused on both community building and catalyzing discussions as well as disseminating resources. Working closely with libraries, the community is a platform for dialog, sharing data and best practices, and creative problem solving. Collaboration with librarians is integral to the success of current and future journal negotiation community of practice work.

This selective literature review evaluates open educational resources (OER) efficacy studies through the lens of critical pedagogy. OER have radical potential as transformative tools for critical pedagogy or they can serve as a cost-free version of the status quo, inclined toward propagating austerity. This review analyzes studies published since 2008 with regard to cost, access, pedagogy, commercialization, and labor. These criteria are used to make explicit subjects indirectly addressed, if not ignored completely, in the existing literature. In 2015, the University of North Dakota (UND) had no institutional program to promote adoption, creation, or utilization of Open Educational Resources (OERs). Few faculty were using, creating, reviewing, or in any way supporting OERs. To our knowledge, just three faculty members had written two open textbooks, and they received no institutional support. The culture of OERs and Open Access was not well known or understood across campus, and no institutions in the North Dakota University System (NDUS, a coalition of 11 public postsecondary institutions in North Dakota) had undertaken widespread promotion or adoption of OERs.

Expanding Access to Biodiversity Literature (EABL) is an IMLS-funded grant designed to enhance the collection of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), a digital library providing open access to over 50 million pages of legacy biodiversity literature.

BHL's collection is built on the digitized holdings of its member libraries, typically large research universities, natural history museums, and other well-funded organizations. EABL, however, solicits content outside the BHL consortium; small organizations that often lack the resources for cataloging and digitization nevertheless have valuable and unique literature to contribute. Dominican Scholar Milestone: 100,000 Downloads In Calendar Year, Sarah Gardner, Dave Albee

Since Thanksgiving of 2015, research by Dominican faculty and students has been downloaded by more than 100,000 people in over 190 countries through Dominican Scholar, a free online institutional repository. Dominican Scholar was created to showcase and share the intellectual, professional, and artistic skills of Dominican faculty and students, and the depth of their knowledge in their field of study. A majority of the research papers and master’s theses are deposited by students and discovered via Google Search. Many are presented at Dominican’s annual Scholarly and Creative Works Conference in the spring.
