Breaking Down The "Walls Of A Facade": The Influence Of Compartmentalization On Gay College Males' Meaning-Making, Daniel Tillapaugh

Daniel Tillapaugh

This study examined how the act of compartmentalization influenced gay male college students’ meaning-making of their multiple identities. This study, involving 17 males attending colleges in Southern California, explored how these students compartmentalized their identities within different cultures, including race, religion, and socioeconomic class, as well as in different student cultures, such as fraternities and student organizations. The findings of this constructivist grounded theory study illuminate how compartmentalization of one’s identity is seen at the individual, group, and systemic levels within society to help and hinder these gay males’ holistic sense of self. Additionally, implications for professional practice and research …

Student Success For Men Of Color In Community Colleges: A Review Of Published Literature And Research, 1998 – 2012, Frank Harris Iii, J Luke Wood

Frank Harris III

A substantial body of scholarship on men of color in postsecondary education has emerged since the late 1990s. Yet, only recently have scholars begun to pursue empirical insights about the status of men of color who attend community colleges. In an effort to inform future research, this article reviews the published scholarship on student success for men of color in community colleges. The 5 domains of African American male student success in community colleges proposed by Wood and Harris (2012) served as a conceptual framework for reviewing and discussing the published scholarship. Following the review of scholarship, knowledge gaps and …

A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis Of The Role Of Socioeconomic Status In Asian American And Pacific Islander Students’ Transition To College, Samuel D. Museus, Rican Vue Dec 2012

A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis Of The Role Of Socioeconomic Status In Asian American And Pacific Islander Students’ Transition To College, Samuel D. Museus, Rican Vue

Samuel D Museus

The purpose of this study is to examine socioeconomic differences in the interpersonal factors that influence college access among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). Data on 1,460 AAPIs from the Education Longitudinal Study (ELS: 02/06) were analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques. Findings suggest that parental expectations, parental involvement, teacher quality, and peer academic orientation were associated with more positive transitions to college among AAPIs but that the nature of those relationships was complex and varied across socioeconomic statuses. The authors discuss the limitations of national databases in studying AAPIs and offer implications for higher education research, policy, and …

Policies That Enhance Learning And Teaching, Shannon M. Chance, Pamela L. Eddy, Gavin Duffy, Brian Bowe, Jen Harvey Dec 2012

Policies That Enhance Learning And Teaching, Shannon M. Chance, Pamela L. Eddy, Gavin Duffy, Brian Bowe, Jen Harvey

Pamela L. Eddy

Educational institutions often implement policies with the intention of influencing how learning and teaching occur. Generally, such policies are not as effective as their makers would like; changing the behavior of third-level teachers proves difficult. Nevertheless, a policy instituted in 2006 at the Dublin Institute of Technology has met with success: each newly hired faculty member must have a post-graduate qualification in “Learning and Teaching” or successfully complete one within the first two years of employment. The intention is to build teachers’ knowledge about student-centered pedagogies and their capacity to implement them. As a result of this policy (and associated …

Una Nueva Hegemonía: Gestación De La Ley Orgánica De 1944-45, Imanol Ordorika

Imanol Ordorika

Master Mentor: Robert Schuellein '44 Leaves A Lasting Impression, Maureen E. Schlangen

Maureen E. Schlangen

Robert Schuellein left the University of Dayton for the National Institutes of Health in 1963. But he never forgot UD and the legacy he started here: With his faculty colleague and fellow Marianist Paul Machowicz ’41, Schuellein helped create the first master’s program in the College of Arts and Sciences. When Schuellein died in 2011 at the age of 91, he added to that legacy — with a bequest totaling $2.5 million for a faculty research endowment in biology.

Black In The Rainbow: “Quaring” The Black Gay Male Student Experience At Historically Black Universities, Darris R. Means, Audrey J. Jaeger Dec 2012

Black In The Rainbow: “Quaring” The Black Gay Male Student Experience At Historically Black Universities, Darris R. Means, Audrey J. Jaeger

Darris R Means, Ph.D.

This qualitative study explores the collegiate experiences of four Black gay male students who attend historically Black universities. The study utilizes a quare theory framework, an alternative framework to queer theory. Quare theory calls our attention to the intersection of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. Data were collected through a 1:1 interview with each participant and photovoice. This study reveals how the students navigate their collegiate experiences, internalize homophobia, begin to embrace their own sexual orientation identity, and find support (or lack of support) for their sexual orientation identities. Recommendations for practice and directions for future research are offered.

Applied Learning In Online Education: A Comparative Study Employing Deal Critical Reflection, John R. Fisher, Margaret Mittelman

Dr. John R. Fisher

This article stretches the boundaries of the meaning of applied learning to include online learning activities. The DEAL model of critical reflection was used to obtain student feedback in comparing two delivery strategies of an upper- division online leadership capstone course. Student reflection comments were analyzed for offerings of the course in summer and fall semesters. The fall delivery of the course adopted an applied reading summary strategy which required students to specifically apply their learning to their work and career plans. The DEAL model of critical reflection provided rich qualitative data evaluating teaching approaches and suggested students preferred applied …

Seven Years After The Call: Students’ And Graduates’ Perceptions Of The Re-Envisioned Ed.D., Jill A. Perry Dec 2012

Seven Years After The Call: Students’ And Graduates’ Perceptions Of The Re-Envisioned Ed.D., Jill A. Perry

Jill A Perry

Given continued confusion about the Ed.D.degree, universities affiliated with the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) have re-envisioned it using a set of guiding principles and design features. In this study, we investigated why students and graduates chose to pursue the Ed.D., what and how they learned, how they viewed themselves, and whether they perceived their programs to be aligned with CPED’s principles. Data were collected from 296 participants at 14 CPED institutions using an online survey. Results indicated respondents agreed that their programs were aligned with CPED principles, helped them meet their professional and personal goals, and developed …

Changing Schools Of Education Through Grassroots Faculty-Led Change., Jill A. Perry

Jill A Perry

In this article I report on the application of the lens of Rogers’ (1995) change agent roles and Kezar and Lester’s (2011) adaptation of tempered radicals in order to understand the leadership roles assumed by three individual faculty members located at three distinct schools of education. These faculty leaders utilized the concepts and principles of the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) to lead redesigns of their Ed.D. programs. Qualitative data were gathered during a larger study on institutional change. Findings contribute to understanding grassroots leadership and how it works in collaboration with top- down authorities.
