A Review Of Ai-Powered Writing Tools And Their Implications For Academic Integrity In The Language Classroom, Jasper Roe, Willy A. Renandya, George M. Jacobs

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Writers have many digital tools available to help them with the creation of text. In some cases, these tools have been in existence for a long time, such as spellcheckers and basic grammar checkers that are available on word processing software. Today, new and increasingly more advanced tools are in use, and the ramifications of their use are not yet fully understood, particularly in the language classroom. Public interest in such tools has reached new levels with the release of artificially intelligent tools such as ChatGPT. In addition to this, the speed at which assistive writing technologies are developing may …

Internship Experiences Of Pre-Service Teachers: A Case Study Of Efl Korean Students In The Philippines, Gina B. Ugalingan, Aileen Bautista, Rochelle Irene Lucas

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Various studies on the different experiences of pre-service teachers who are non-native speakers of English emerged to strengthen the teaching curriculum and empower them to be equipped as they take the role of classroom teachers. Some foreign students even study abroad to strengthen their proficiency in the English language; more so, other teacher education programs offer internships abroad. Studies support that teaching internship experiences impact shaping novice teachers’ identity (Borg, 2003; Kim & Cho, 2014; Ulla, 2016). This case study describes the teaching experiences of eight Korean pre-service teachers during their internship. The participants were students under the program of …

Preparing Global South Accountants To Be 'Superstar' Communicators, Pia Patricia P. Tenedero Dec 2022

Preparing Global South Accountants To Be 'Superstar' Communicators, Pia Patricia P. Tenedero

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

This paper investigates how universities in the Philippines prepare accounting students for communication in global workplaces. As an emerging global leader in offshore accounting services, the Philippines is seeing a growing demand for communicatively competent accountants who can be deployed globally. This trend consequently places a greater onus on the higher education system to produce accounting graduates who can communicate effectively. This paper examines what constitutes “effective communication” in the context of two Manila-based, top-performing accounting schools. Using ethnographic data, I examine how communication is entextualized in curricular documents and how these notions are enacted in classroom interactions. Analysis of …

The Philippines has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing a lockdown in an effort to suppress the spread of the disease. This measure has led to unprecedented disruption in many sectors of the economy. Educational institutions have similarly been affected. As schools are the ideal breeding ground for “super spreader” events, the suspension of face-to-face instruction is an important control measure from a public health perspective. Physical closures may need to be maintained even after the lockdown is eased. This situation poses a challenge on how to maintain the continuity of the Philippines’ human capital development during the pandemic.

The importance of investing in higher education cannot be overemphasized. It can affect individuals’ income as well as the nations’ progress in terms of the quality of its labor force. However, the participation rate in the Philippines in higher education over several decades has remained relatively stagnant compared with our neighboring countries like Thailand and Korea. Part of the reason for the low participation rate can be attributed to poverty issues as well as the financing problems of the able students who lack sufficient funds to cover the cost of education. Individuals and even organizations always seek the help of …

Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) has contributed to the accumulation of capital and the improvement of the economy’s productive capacity through the incorporation of new inputs and modern technologies in the production process. Neoclassical and endogenous growth models have been widely used to empirically test the benefits of FDI (Almfraji & Almsafir, 2014). However, results of testing theoretical benefits are varying from regions, countries, and industries. Conflicting relationships and impacts range from significant to non-significant, positive to negative impacts, directly or indirectly. Despite that, FDI inflows have still been recognized to influence employment and wages, infrastructure development, human capital development, technology …

Role Of The Commission On Higher Education In Promoting Quality Education, Cecilia F. Malolos, Tereso S. Tullao Jr

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Quality education is seen as an important contributor to the country’s economic development. The role of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in promoting this quality education is embodied in its legal mandate. As a government agency mandated to ensure that the delivery of quality education is observed by schools of higher learning to ultimately attain the national development goals and improve the economic condition of the Philippines, CHED was given enough authorities to perform its bi-focal roles of being regulatory or developmental. Acknowledging the significance of accreditation in promoting quality education, quality assurance activities and the different accrediting bodies …

Mas Mahal Sa Up Kaysa Dlsu: Isang Alternatibong Pagsusukat Sa Gastos Ng Edukasyon, Tereso S. Tullao Jr, Br. Vincenzo Dela Croce

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
