Leading In The Mathematics Classroom, Jon Warwick Apr 2008

Leading In The Mathematics Classroom, Jon Warwick

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Within the United Kingdom (UK) higher education sector there has been a considerable amount of debate in recent years about the level of quantitative and literacy skills exhibited by students on entry to university courses. Indeed the UK government commissioned two major reports on the development of skills at school level in the post-14 age range focussing specifically on the development of quantitative skills (Roberts 2002; Smith 2004) since there has been a sustained year-on-year fall in the numbers of students opting to study mathematics, science, and engineering subjects at degree level. Coupled with this reluctance of students to specialise …

A Schweitzer Approach To Higher Education: Utilizing Principles Drawn From The Life Of Albert Schweitzer To Develop A Holistic And Comprehensive Educational Model, John B. Miller Jan 2008

A Schweitzer Approach To Higher Education: Utilizing Principles Drawn From The Life Of Albert Schweitzer To Develop A Holistic And Comprehensive Educational Model, John B. Miller

Theses and Graduate Projects

While quite young, Albert Schweitzer was already a well regarded philosopher, a gifted musician, and a groundbreaking theologian when he became a medical doctor and devoted his life to service in equatorial Africa where he received the inspiration for his central ethic of Reverence for Life. A Schweitzer-based higher educational approach draws upon Schweitzer's life example in interweaving elements of academics, arts, spirituality, service, and the direct experience of nature. The academic content is grounded in complexity theory, a post-moderm discipline which expands upon Schweitzer's recognition that, "l am life that wills to live in the midst of life that …

Moral Development Of Accounting Students: Opportunities And Challenges, Lana L. Becker Jan 2008

Moral Development Of Accounting Students: Opportunities And Challenges, Lana L. Becker

ETSU Faculty Works

Business schools are under scrutiny today as accreditation agencies, professional organizations, and employers hold them accountable for the ethical training of future professionals. This literature review explores how the understanding of Kohlberg’s moral development theory can help accounting educators in their commitment to develop the ethical competencies of students. Lawrence Kohlberg’s stages of moral cognition are explained as well as James Rest’s contributions to the field of moral psychology. This paper synthesizes research findings specifically related to the moral development of accounting students and proposes possible explanations for these results. While the potential to morally develop students of higher education …

Shifting Perceptions Within Online Problem-Based Learning, Roisin Donnelly, Timo Portimojärvi

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter is aimed at supporting academic staff in universities and colleges who have begun or are considering introducing online problem-based learning (OPBL) for students’ learning. OPBL is a promising combination of pedagogical innovations and technological solutions which support and enhance each other. In this chapter we will examine the perceptions present in higher education today, which are connected with the development within the research fields of e-learning and problem-based learning. This chapter is based on the recent and extensive emergence of literature on online learning and the success of problem-based learning (PBL). Traditionally, PBL has usually been conducted in …

Analysis Of The Transformative Potential Of Blended Problem-Based Learning In Higher Education Faculty Development, Roisin Donnelly Jan 2008

Analysis Of The Transformative Potential Of Blended Problem-Based Learning In Higher Education Faculty Development, Roisin Donnelly

Conference papers

A hugely important area in any form of PBL delivery is the role of the instructor; in a blended learning environment, it is even more crucial. Hughes and Daykin (2002) have suggested that a move to online delivery needs a greater attention to design and development of facilitator skills than has been previously recognised. A blended module for faculty, delivered using a problem-based learning approach, is the setting for continuing research into the transformative role that an instructor can play during the learning process. Coppola, Hiltz and Rotter (2001) identify a number of roles played by instructors in e-learning, but …

Program Accountability In Teacher Education: A Study Of The Perceptions Of University And State Government Leaders In The State Of Washington, Gary W. Ballou

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation explored the perceptions of accountability in teacher education programs in the State of Washington across three different stakeholder groups: university deans and/or program directors, legislators, and executive staff members (Governor). This qualitative study involved three (3) rounds of interviews. First, individual open-ended interviews were conducted with 30 individuals (10 Washington state legislators, 5 executive staff members, and 15 university deans/program directors). Second, individual follow-up interviews were conducted with 5 participants from the first round of interviews. Third, a focus group comprised of the same 5 participants from the follow-up interviews were asked for even deeper specifications and insights …

The Leadership Self-Identity Of Women College Presidents, Robbie Hertneky Phd Jan 2008

The Leadership Self-Identity Of Women College Presidents, Robbie Hertneky Phd

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The purpose of this research study was to explore the concept of leadership self-identity in a particular population of formal leaders—women college presidents. Using narrative inquiry, the research examined the following: how these women describe and define themselves as leaders, what personal attributes they believe allow them to be leaders, their past and future career intentions, how their relationships with others influence their leadership self-identity, and the stories they tell about themselves and leadership. Participants were asked questions designed to reflect their core identity and personal narrative, and to describe their career and relationships. Common themes that emerge include: how …

Fostering Sustainability In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Transformative Leadership And Change Strategies, Kim H. Mcnamara Jan 2008

Fostering Sustainability In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Transformative Leadership And Change Strategies, Kim H. Mcnamara

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

As evidence of the earth’s limited capacity to sustain human life mounts, institutions of higher education are being looked to for leadership in the effort to educate students about environmental concerns and support the development of sustainable innovations. Colleges and universities are responding to this call for leadership by starting and/or expanding environmental research programs, integrating sustainability issues throughout the curriculum, adopting sustainable operations, and building green facilities. Reflecting upon the sustainability efforts of these institutions, this research study explores the following questions: What factors are essential for initiating and leading a successful change effort to foster sustainability in higher …

Evolving Learning: Educators’ Inner Experiences Of Engaging In Service-Learning With Undergraduates, Cara Meixner Jan 2008

Evolving Learning: Educators’ Inner Experiences Of Engaging In Service-Learning With Undergraduates, Cara Meixner

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Evolving Learning: Educators’ Inner Experiences of Engaging in Service-Learning with Undergraduates is an exploratory, qualitative study of faculty members’ learning, growth, and development in service-learning contexts. Through two, interwoven forms of constructivist grounded theory – situational mapping and dimensional analysis – this dissertation brought voice to a once ‘private’ perspective, making explicit what all is happening as participants make meaning of their experiences engaging in service-learning with college students. A three-phased series of recursive, comparative interviews and concurrent analysis resulted in the development of a grounded theory best captured by a core, organizing perspective – evolving learning. This perspective is …

Measuring Knowledge Of Natural Selection: A Comparison Of The C.I.N.S., An Open-Response Instrument, And An Oral Interview, Ross Nehm, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 2008

Measuring Knowledge Of Natural Selection: A Comparison Of The C.I.N.S., An Open-Response Instrument, And An Oral Interview, Ross Nehm, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Growing recognition of the central importance of fostering an in-depth understanding of natural selection has, surprisingly, failed to stimulate work on the development and rigorous evaluation of instruments that measure knowledge of it. We used three different methodological tools, the Conceptual Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS), a modified version of Bishop and Anderson's (Bishop and Anderson [1990] Journal of Research in Science Teaching 27: 415-427) open-response test that we call the Open Response Instrument (ORI), and an oral interview derived from both instruments, to measure biology majors' understanding of and alternative conceptions about natural selection. We explored how these instruments …

Preparing Faculty And Staff For Change, Susan Madsen Jan 2008

Preparing Faculty And Staff For Change, Susan Madsen

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Pursuing excellence in higher education requires constant and continuous change. In fact, throughout the past few decades the need for the effective change in higher education has not only increased but become more complex. New challenges have surfaced in today’s educational, economic, and political environments making it more difficult to strive for and obtain this true excellence. In his book Pursuing Excellence in Higher Education, Brent D. Ruben (2004) presents the eight fundamental challenges in higher education today: 1) broadening public appreciation for the work of the academy; 2) better understanding and addressing the needs of workplaces; 3) becoming more …

The Role Of Governance And Its Influence On Quality Enhancing Mechanism In Higher Education, Syed Naeem Ahmed Jan 2008

The Role Of Governance And Its Influence On Quality Enhancing Mechanism In Higher Education, Syed Naeem Ahmed

Business Review

Universities live in complex contexts, compete in many different marketplaces, and perform a bewildering array of highly sophisticated services for many diverse constituencies. Although universities focus their efforts primarily on the key dimensions of teaching and research, they engage in a wide range of additional activities derived from the expertise and resources accumulated in support of teaching and research. With the expansion of the assessment of quality at higher education, budgetary allocation, and particularly private sector involvement at higher education for the last five years, institutions became much more complex and the role of Governance and its influence on quality …
