25 Bible Verses To Connect Faith And Mathematics Using Weekly Devotionals, Written Reflections, And Memory Verses, Mark Colgan

Engaging Teaching Today Conference

Faith and learning integration can take various forms for different faculty members, but I believe it helps to do it regularly (at least once per week) by giving students a chance to discuss in groups and then write about their own ideas. On Monday, I typically pick a verse that relates to the week’s topics. I write the verse on the board before students arrive, along with a discussion question, and then show a YouTube video related to the verse. I have students briefly discuss the question in groups, and they can memorize the verses for bonus points on quizzes. …

Grace, Grace, By The Side Of The Road, Hannah Tienvieri Apr 2022

Grace, Grace, By The Side Of The Road, Hannah Tienvieri

English Senior Capstone

"Grace, Grace, By the Side of the Road" is a collection of poetry and creative nonfiction that contemplates the messiness of growing up and the events, relationships, and environments that shape a person’s identity. This collection traces my experiences from early childhood to college and maintains a particular interest in the landscape of the Midwest as being as integral to my sense of self as family, friendships, and the body. The text itself is an attempt to wrestle with the question: what does love look like amid hardship, change, and imperfection? In “Grace, Grace, By the Side of the Road,” …

From Renaissance To Robert: The Machiavellian Cycle Of Life, Death, And Rebirth, Noah Huseman Feb 2022

From Renaissance To Robert: The Machiavellian Cycle Of Life, Death, And Rebirth, Noah Huseman

English Senior Capstone

In this paper, I explore the recursive nature of cultural commentary as it is informed by evolution of the monster. As one culture rises to prominence, so does the monster which comments upon it. I specifically examine the cultural monstrosity of the Machiavellian archetype as it is portrayed across time, first placing Machiavelli's theory in its original context, then branching out to the cultural context surrounding its appearance in both the literature of Renaissance England and the stories of today. Once I set up the broader theoretical context, I probe more deeply into two literary depictions of the Machiavel: Iago …

Sanctuary, Abigail G. Chandler Feb 2022

Sanctuary, Abigail G. Chandler

English Senior Capstone

Sanctuary is a collection of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that explores relationships. I pull from my own experiences with family, friendships, self-knowledge, and the divine to connect with readers over shared loss and over attempts at understanding goodness, beauty, and truth. Sanctuary seeks to look at relationships multilaterally, holding pain and pleasure in juxtaposition. Everyone needs people who make them feel safe, wanted, and known, and sanctuary is not found in the same places for everyone.

The Paradox Of Loss, Abby Pugsley Feb 2022

The Paradox Of Loss, Abby Pugsley

English Senior Capstone

The Paradox of Loss is a collection of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry that leans into the tension humans experience as eternal beings in a world marked by impermanence. We encounter loss in countless ways throughout our lives, and yet we also look toward a future where all is restored. This collection is an exploration of the losses I have experienced, presented in both fictional and nonfictional forms. My hope is to show the life that pervades even in loss, both through our attachment to the physical world and in the way our grief points toward our desire for permanence, …

The Effects Of Trauma On Identity Formation: Pursuing And Obtaining Individual Freedom In Emerson’S Nature And Creech’S Chasing Redbird, Mckenzie Hershberger Feb 2022

The Effects Of Trauma On Identity Formation: Pursuing And Obtaining Individual Freedom In Emerson’S Nature And Creech’S Chasing Redbird, Mckenzie Hershberger

English Senior Capstone

Nature and Chasing Redbird provide poignant examples of the restorative power found in the natural world, and a thorough analysis of the works and lives of the authors reveal past trauma created the need for this restoration. Traumatic experiences shape an individual’s thought processes, as each decision the individual makes is based upon fearing an uncertain outcome. Throughout Nature, Emerson references a child’s innocence, demonstrating that a child’s perspective has not yet been tainted by experience. Emerson idealizes his past childhood as he endured grievances that motivated him to confront his trauma while in nature himself. An example for Emerson’s …

Exploring White Racial Identity Development Within Christian Colleges, Glen Kinoshita Jan 2022

Exploring White Racial Identity Development Within Christian Colleges, Glen Kinoshita

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Racial identity development is a growth process in which many college students engage as they regularly interact with peers and instructors from diverse backgrounds. As compositional diversity, as well as diversity of thought, lags at Christian colleges, the purpose of this qualitative, narrative study was to understand how White students who have undergone significant progress in their racial identity development, describe their process while attending predominantly White, evangelical, Christian colleges. Three participants from three Christian colleges/universities were interviewed, a total of nine, White student participants. One college was located in the Pacific Northwest and two colleges were located in Southern …

Purpose And Autonomous Functioning In College Students, Michelle Steffenhagen Jan 2022

Purpose And Autonomous Functioning In College Students, Michelle Steffenhagen

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This study sought to understand the relationship between a sense of purpose and autonomous functioning in college students. Further, the results were compared with the independent variables of gender, volunteerism, and faith community participation. Participants (n = 356) were undergraduate college students at a small private liberal arts Christian institution located in the Midwest of the United States of America. Measures included the Claremont Purpose Scale and the Index of Autonomous Functioning. Pearson correlations were used to analyze the data, and purpose and autonomous functioning were positively correlated. Women reported higher levels of a sense of purpose and autonomous functioning. …

Advising And Supporting College Students Experiencing Imposter Syndrome: A Christian Perspective, Jeannine Kranzow Jan 2022

Advising And Supporting College Students Experiencing Imposter Syndrome: A Christian Perspective, Jeannine Kranzow

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

For Christian student affairs educators, it is essential that the methods of advising and supporting students be in line with biblical directives for a whole and holy life. This paper will examine approaches for advising and supporting students experiencing imposter syndrome. Current research on impostor syndrome is presented as well as a discussion of ways that Christian insight can provide additional guidance and awareness for supporting struggling students. By connecting both biblical wisdom and the current scholarship, a Christian perspective of impostor syndrome, anchored in a discussion on spiritual warfare, is offered. Using this perspective, recommendations for practice are identified.

Living Life Together: A Qualatative Study Of Taylor University's Lifestyle Covenant, Jana Roste

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Taylor University, a small, Christian, liberal arts institution in the Midwest, utilizes a lifestyle covenant which outlines expectations for campus life to promote character development and fulfill the university’s mission. In pursuit of exploring community members’ perceptions of the Life Together Covenant (LTC), the larger qualitative study, consisting of individual interviews with ten senior students, ten staff members, and ten faculty members, found that participants generally perceived the LTC as a guide or set of expectations to live cohesively at Taylor. This article focuses on the student findings and analyses. Students generally perceive and experience the LTC in a legalistic …
