In the United States over the past few years a great number of conditioning machines have been purchased by schools, clubs, hospitals and private citizens to supplement or replace barbell weight training equipment. Some reasons given for the recent popularity of the new weight training machines over the more conventional barbells are that they: provide greater safety, save time, and do the job as well or better than conventional barbells.

It was the purpose of this paper (1) to study the objectives of intramural sports for youth, (2) to show that football, played as an intramural sport stressing physical conditioning, fundamental skills, and game competition can be of great value to boys who are not qualified for the varsity team, and (3) to suggest methods and plans for operating an intramural football program in a junior high school.

All of the high schools in Region One of the Utah State Athletic Association were surveyed for this study. Region One is located in Northern Utah and included all the high schools in Cache, Box Elder Counties, and one high school in Weber County.
This Region is made up of urban, suburban, and rural districts. Several central towns comprise the greatest part of the total population, but many pupils are transported from outlying areas to consolidated schools in these centers. In the physical education work of the public schools the accomplishment of character and moral development through this subject is accepted but unproven. Through three years of teaching and extensive reading in the theory and practice of this field the writer is very much aware of this condition. The accomplishment of the health betterment through physical education activities is universally accepted, but the achievement of character betterment, although universally mentioned by educators, is not generally proven as an actual occurrence.
