Background
Intervention effects observed in efficacy trials are rarely replicated when the interventions are broadly disseminated, underscoring the need for more information about factors influencing real-life implementation and program impact. Using data from the ongoing national implementation of an evidence-based HIV prevention program [Focus on Youth in The Caribbean (FOYC)] in The Bahamas, this study examines factors influencing teachers’ patterns of implementation, the impact of teachers’ initial implementation of FOYC, and subsequent delivery of the booster sessions on students’ outcomes.
Methods
Data were collected from the 80 government elementary and 34 middle schools between 2011 and 2014, involving 208 grade …

Addition Of The Apical Oblique Projection Increases The Detection Of Acute Traumatic Shoulder Abnormalities In Adults, Kimberley J. Ross, Grant Tomkinson, Bonnie F. Mcgregor, Oliver C. Ayres, Diana Piscitelli
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Purpose
Plain radiographic evaluation of acute shoulder trauma in adults requires a minimum of two projections, commonly the anteroposterior (AP) and lateral scapular projections, with additional projections taken for diagnosis. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine whether the addition of the apical oblique (AO) projection to the AP and lateral scapular projections increases the number and/or alters the types of abnormalities detected in the examination of acute shoulder trauma.
Methods
Examinations of 56 adults who had undergone three-projection (AP, lateral scapular, AO) radiographic shoulder examination for acute trauma were allocated into two-projection (AP, lateral scapular) and three-projection …

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
Comprehensive school physical activity programs (CSPAPs) have been highlighted by numerous public health and education agencies for their potential to improve the health and academic achievement of American youth. A CSPAP integrates physical activity throughout the school environment before, during and after school by engaging educators, children, families and community organizations. As the design, implementation and evaluation of effective CSPAP programs has inched forward, so has the call for physical education teacher education (PETE) programs to prepare the next generation of physical educators with the skills and knowledge needed to one day lead CSPAP efforts in K-12 schools. The purpose …

Classroom physical activity (PA) has been linked to a multitude of health andacademic benefits. However, due to barriers such as lack of time and resourcesmany teachers are not implementing classroom PA to the degree they would liketo. One innovative solution is to integrate classroom PA into academic concepts.Based on self-determination theory, this pilot study evaluated the effectivenessof a teacher-developed purposeful movement teaching strategy on PA, on-taskbehavior and academic achievement. Two third grade classrooms participated inthis pilot study, one acting as the comparison and the other working with theschool Physical Education teacher to develop the active lessons. The evaluationconsisted of accelerometers, …

Travel narratives, both historical and modern, depict a hero’s quest for insight and self-discovery where the outward journey is a literal and metaphorical search for one’s authentic self, spirituality, and life’s meaning. This article reports the results of a study that examined the association between travel’s liminal experience and insight. Using content analysis of 50 published adventure travel narratives, a significant association between insight and liminality was identified, and the tentative conclusion that liminal experience may be a stimulus for insight was made. Variables (solo/group travel, travel motivation, gender, and cultural novelty) hypothesized to moderate the association between liminality and …
When Is A Journey Sacred? Exploring Twelve Properties Of The Sacred, Jasmine M. Goodnow, Kelly S. Bloom
When Is A Journey Sacred? Exploring Twelve Properties Of The Sacred, Jasmine M. Goodnow, Kelly S. Bloom
Health and Human Development
One of the first definitive works on the concept of the sacred was Emile Durkheim’s 1912 work The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life. In it, he defined the sacred in opposition to the profane. The next major work on the sacred was not until Mircea Eliade’s The Sacred and the Profane, in 1959. A review of the literature since that time reveals that the thinking on the sacred/profane dichotomy has changed little since these seminal writings. A useful tool for examining the sacred was created in 1989 when Belk, Wallendorf and Sherry explored the dichotomy as it …

Rumination, Realignment And Reflection: Who Is Really Teaching Health Education In Secondary Schools?, Donna Barwood
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In Western Australia (WA), health education (HE) is timetabled as a separate, disciplinebased subject belonging to the health and physical education (HPE) learning area. Globally, this subject is identified as a key site to support and strengthen the health and wellbeing of children and young people. In WA, teachers from outside-of-the-field of HPE are commonly used to deliver HE. This situation is not exclusive to HE nor to WA, and in some circles is referred to as education’s dirty little secret. This mixed-methods study critically examined the role of the teacher in the delivery of HE with the purpose of …
