Investigating Problem-Based Learning Tutorship In Medical And Engineering Programs In Malaysia, Virginie F. C. Servant, Eleanor F. A. Dewar

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Although Malaysia was the first country in Asia to adopt problem-based learning (PBL), the impact that this has had on its tutors remains largely unexplored. This paper details a qualitative study of the changing perceptions of teaching roles in two groups of problem-based learning tutors in two institutional contexts—one in medicine located in Kuala Lumpur and one in engineering located in Johor Bahru. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, the authors attempt to describe the way in which the two groups have experienced their changing professional world, and the mental processes through which they rationalize the transformation of Malaysia’s educational landscape. This …

An Effective Jig For Friction Stir Welding Of Pipe Butt Joint, Azman Ismail, Mokhtar Awang, Mohd Afendi Rojan Feb 2015

An Effective Jig For Friction Stir Welding Of Pipe Butt Joint, Azman Ismail, Mokhtar Awang, Mohd Afendi Rojan

Azman Ismail

A dedicated or specialized friction stir welding (FSW) machine is quite costly especially for pipe joining. Therefore, not many institutions manage to conduct their research on FSW at their facilities. Besides that, the difficulty to design a jig that can hold the complex shape such as pipe section tightly and easily to be removed during and after the FSW process respectively will nullify the intentions. In many institutions, there was either conventional or CNC milling machine available in their workshops. Thus, a jig called orbital clamping unit (OCU) was designed to suit this milling machine. It acts as an additional …

Using Simulated Virtual Interactivity In Construction Education, Saeed Rokooei, James Goedert

Saeed Rokooei

This paper briefly illustrates the design procedure, implementation and findings of a three year research project. Virtual Interactive Construction Education (VICE) is a project-based pedagogical model that uses a simulated environment to alter traditional subject-based lectures into virtual project-based interactive learning methods in construction education. For this purpose, the context of construction engineering and management curricula were aggregated into six construction project prototypes. VICE-Bridge is the first of these six prototypes that exposes players to experiential problem solving activities toward achieving a goal situation (construct the bridge) from an initial situation (start of construction). It was designed for students with …

A Comparison Of The Learning Styles Of Aviation And Non-Aviation College Students, Tim Brady, Alan Stolzer, Bradley Muller, Debbie Schaum Feb 2015

A Comparison Of The Learning Styles Of Aviation And Non-Aviation College Students, Tim Brady, Alan Stolzer, Bradley Muller, Debbie Schaum

Alan J. Stolzer

In contrast to established educational fields such as mathematics, the discipline of aviation education is relatively young. Despite strong signs that our discipline is maturing (Brady 1991), it is not clear as to the extent to which a larger body of instructional theory can be applied specifically to aviation instruction (Telfer 1993, p. 210) or the broader field of aviation education. A starting point in unraveling this complex question is to better understand the characteristics of aviation students. In recent years a limited number of researchers have begun to address this and related questions (Moore and Telfer 1990; Quilty 1996; …

The Development Of Advanced Control Laboratories, Matthew Randall Winter Feb 2015

The Development Of Advanced Control Laboratories, Matthew Randall Winter

Graduate Theses - Mechanical Engineering

In this thesis, a series of advanced control labs have been developed for use in the senior/graduate-level advanced controls course. Advanced controls laboratories are non-existent at many institutions, and since hands on laboratories are such an integral part of engineering education it was decided to develop a few. The goal of these laboratories is to reinforce some of the more advanced topics in control theory. Topics of the laboratories include Parameter Identification, Eigenstructure Assignment, Linear Optimal Regulators and Linear Quadratic Gaussian Control with Loop Transfer Recovery. These laboratories are carried out on the Educational Control Products Model 210 Rectilinear Control …

An Empirical Study Of Critical Success Factors Of Mobile Learning Platform From The Perspective Of Instructors, Muasaad Alrasheedi, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Mobile learning is newest learning platform and based on the rapid rate of proliferation of mobile technology throughout the world is expected to grow at a rapid rate. However, the adoption of m-Learning is proceeding at a cautious rate. This mismatch in the rate of growth of the technology itself and the use of the technology in learning is a subject of extensive interest to researchers. However, research in the area has been mostly focused on understanding the success factors of the platform from learners’ perspective. In this research, we have conducted an extensive analysis of the extent to which …

Exhibition Handlist, Kathleen M. Webb Jan 2015

Exhibition Handlist, Kathleen M. Webb

Kathleen M. Webb

In preparing for Imprints and Impressions, we ran across many interesting words that have fallen out of the general lexicon. With this booklet, we have brought one back: handlist. Dean Kathleen Webb ran across it in a 1944 booklet from the J. Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City. Though the word no longer appears in most new dictionaries, it’s still in the Oxford English Dictionary: A list of a particular type or category of things, presented in a readily consultable form; esp. a list of the books or manuscripts in a particular place, on a particular subject, etc.; a …

Sola Gratia: Grace In The Engineering Curriculum And Profession, Ethan Brue Jan 2015

Sola Gratia: Grace In The Engineering Curriculum And Profession, Ethan Brue

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Integral Christian higher education is in vogue. Most Christian institutions of higher education who take their mission seriously make the claim that the education offered to students is one where faith and learning are not separate. It is a belief that their entire educational enterprise is inexorably tied in some way, shape, or form to our new life in Christ. Most engineering programs on Christian campuses are the outgrowth of this perspective. Over the last fifty years, numerous philosophers, writers, scientists, and engineers have developed a solid foundation from which engineering can be understood as an essential calling in the …
