The Efficiency Of Rainwater Harvesting Systems In The Lebanese Coastal Zone, Kareem Galal

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Water conservation is one of the most important trends within sustainable applications in the world today. The global fresh water demand has increased by 1% per year since the 1980s, and it is estimated that it will continue increasing at this rate until 2050. Therefore, utilizing the available rain water has become a vital parameter for most of the world's countries that lie within the water demand red-zone. Lebanon is moving toward the water demand red-zone rapidly, which has prompted the consideration of rain water harvesting (RWH) systems in the last ten years. The variety in precipitation in the different …

Enhancing Undergraduate Architectural Education (Scale 1 To 1 Design - Build Method), Mostafa Khalifa, Mostafa El Hefnawi

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

On 1997, the board of RIBA – Royal Institute of Britch Architects – highly recommended “experimental learning” or “learning by doing” methods in design studio teaching in architecture as a “practicum”. (Wallis, 2005) Although practicum is the task of learning architecture as practice, most of practicum teaching applications in architectural education are either in postgraduate level or in extra curriculum activities. Based on international studies on Design-Build educations, teaching experience and observation of fresh graduates and junior architects, there is still a shortage between design and execution in undergraduate education level, students faces many problems during project implementation phase in …

Prospects Of Walkability In City Neighborhoodscase Study: The City Center Of Alexandria, Amira Mohamed Said Ammar

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Sustainability, livability and quality of life have become widely discussed issues in the literature of urban planning and design. This study primarily aims to investigate the concept of walkability as a part of livability. To draw a wider theoretical framework for this study, it first seeks to define the terms of ‘livability’ and ‘quality of life’. Then, it focuses on the concept of ‘walkability’ as one of the major components of these terms and as a measurable notion in urban design. Thus, this research seeks to identify a set of indicators of walkability in public spaces to be used for …

Spatial Learning Landscape (Sll) In The Campus Of The Digital Age, Marwa Charkas

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Values controlling campus articulation are mainly rooted in the 'Connectivity' value. Its interpretation exceeds just the physical connections inside the campus to the wider links between the academia and the society. The digital age has thoughtful impacts on the way that every aspect of the life is performing. The campus' shaping values have changed considerably and the connectivity came at the heart of these changes. The way the students are connected to each other's, to their tutors, and even to the place is replaced. In addition, this technological revolution has profoundly wedged the business domain, restructuring the linkage between academia …

Forward To Enhancing Informal Transportation Stations In Crowded Cities, Mary Felix, Mostafa Elhefnawi Jan 2020

Forward To Enhancing Informal Transportation Stations In Crowded Cities, Mary Felix, Mostafa Elhefnawi

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

By observing the planning of developing countries, it is clear that there are several factors that affect the movements and behaviors of transportation. One of these behaviors is the appearance of informal transportation modes, which move along certain paths to fulfil citizens’ needs. The phenomenon of informal transportation modes appears due to a lack of formal transportation modes existing, or a weakness in planning that does not consider the users’ needs or community behavior. This paper focuses on the location of informal transportation stops, which affect transportation movements and traffic jams, by observing and documenting the location and facilities of …
