Solution-Focused Zone Of Proximal Development: A Vygotskyan Contribution To Solution-Focused Therapy, Stephanie Freeman
Solution-Focused Zone Of Proximal Development: A Vygotskyan Contribution To Solution-Focused Therapy, Stephanie Freeman
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
This theoretical paper explores the possibility of combining principles of solution-focused therapy with theories of learning and development by the psychologist Lev Vygotsky, whose thinking led to the development of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory. The similarities and complementaries between these traditions merit attention. Further, SFT has been characterized as an eclectic and constantly evolving approach, the theoretical and philosophical foundations of which are somewhat scattered. Hence, the article attempts to redefine the philosophical and theoretical location of SFT through a “Vygotskyan and CHAT-informed” lens. Since the emphasis in SFT seems to be on the identification and detailed description of the client’s …

Early College As Sites For "Moratorium", Michael Sadowski
Early College As Sites For "Moratorium", Michael Sadowski
Early College Folio
This essay, a response to Elizabeth Blodgett Hall’s “The House of Education Needs Overhaul,” finds common ground in Hall’s depiction of the self-exploration of young students entering her new school and the findings of child and adolescent psychologist Erik Erikson’s identification of a particular point in youth development he dubbed a “psychosocial moratorium.” The author grounds these pioneers’ theories in the transformations he witnessed in students as former director of a Bard Early College program.

Emotional Turmoil Or Peaceful Agreements? A Phenomenological Study On Coping With Reforms In Higher Education Institution, Merilyn Meristo
The Qualitative Report
Promoting changes in an organisation is never an easy task. Coping with changes is an individual process and affects our individual physical and psychological well-being. This study attempted to analyse how university reforms were experienced by academic staff. It is framed by Self-Determination Theory, according to which there are three basic psychological needs that affect all people: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. I conducted Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA; Smith et al., 2009) to gain insight into participants’ experiences during the period of 4 years, 2014-2018. The participants came from two academic staff communities of the same institution. The data collection methods …

Reading is one of the most basic academic skills. An accurate monitor of one’s text comprehension (i.e., metacomprehension) is essential for effective reading as it guides learning and choices of appropriate strategy used to maximize overall understanding. Reimagining Student Engagement In The Remote Classroom Environment, Christopher B. Denning, Serra Acar, Carol Sharicz, Ellen Foust
Pedagogy and the Human Sciences
As higher education institutions struggled with switching to remote teaching due to the COVID19 pandemic, perhaps one of the most important lessons learned is that instructors need additional support to successfully engage students in remote classrooms. Moving courses from the classroom to online delivery radically alters all aspects of teaching and learning, making it easy for interactions to be lost in the transition. It is, therefore, imperative that instructors use elements of effective online teaching and synchronous classroom pedagogy to maintain student engagement. This paper uses the constructivist learning theory as a framework, especially as this theory is applied in …

In this paper we discuss emergent cross-cutting themes across a series of educational intervention projects in which practitioners-in-training adopted and adapted in their proposals and work design the logic of ethnographic experimental collaboration (XCOL) and participatory action research (PAR) (Clark, 2010; Estalella & Sánchez-Criado, 2018) perspectives. We were involved in three interventions developed in Madrid (Spain) across formal and informal learning contexts as part of the internship/practicum of future educational psychologists. Our work was designed in response to the identified needs and demands of the internship sites. Yet, as educational interventions, they were explicitly conceptualized and implemented in ways that …

Close Encounters: Mass Incarceration Tactics, Kevin L. Jones
The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community
As a Black man living in America, my Christian faith walk began at an early age. Growing up in a suburban environment, I had several encounters with law enforcement that shaped my belief system. These encounters were and still are a stark reminder that Black boys and men are under attack. Policing negatively impacts Black boys and men when compared to other races of people. I realized that I was in their cross hairs and I was almost consumed by the criminal justice system on many occasions. Through the lens of Critical Race Theory, this work focused on the centrality …
An Open Letter To My White Christian Friend, Norvella Carter
An Open Letter To My White Christian Friend, Norvella Carter
The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community
Abstract
As human beings, our world revolves around relationships. As Christians, we are charged to have positive relationships that can grow into friendships. The importance of friendships is infused throughout scripture, because they allow us to bring others to Christ, encourage and uplift the soul and bear each other’s burdens. Without deep discussions, relationships cannot grow. As an African American, when I consider my friendships, I am finding an emotional need to share my feelings more deeply with White friends, who sincerely want to know the truth about my views on important social ills, particularly racism. Given the state of …

Connection, Involvement, And Modeling: Co-Constructing A Story Of Resilience Despite Early Parental Loss, Erin E. Silcox
The Qualitative Report
The use of oral history and narrative inquiry to investigate factors of resilience in the face of parental death is absent from the literature. Also, researchers have not linked factors that support resilience against trauma and that lead to positive change in residential treatment with the role of educators. In this study, my father-in-law, Norman, and I answered the research question: What factors in Norman’s adolescent life supported his resilience in the face of an early parental loss? I analyzed Norman’s oral history using narrative analysis methods. Findings include factors that led to Norman’s resilience including his connection to a …

Level 3
Note from the Editors
This short, reflective piece was invited by the editors to illustrate the lived experience of many international undergraduate students in their first year on campus during Covid 19 Level 5 restrictions.
While there is nothing particularly dramatic or sensational in the piece, it does raise important questions regarding all the thought and effort invested in ‘the student experience’ of university in normal times, as well as questions about the time and funding invested in collaborative and group-based learning, and about current ideas around the design of ‘learning spaces’ and e-learning platforms.
No doubt, when the pandemic …
