Perceptions Of Problem Solving: Where's Waldo?, Darla Olk Stack
Perceptions Of Problem Solving: Where's Waldo?, Darla Olk Stack
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Until recently, intervening for a child experiencing difficulty in school meant referring the student for special education evaluation. Problem solving is a new administrative arrangement recommended in many states, where a team of people who know the child, meet to define and recommend interventions to address the concern prior to referral for possible special education placement.
The purpose of this study was to observe the problem solving process and describe the process as it is implemented in the schools. Results indicated that while documentation of problem solving suggested problem solving was taking place, the traditional test-and-place model continues to be …

A Middle School Student-Centered Conflict Management Program: Impact On Student Managers' Self-Esteem, Communication Skills, And Approaches To Conflict Resolution, Thomas J. Keller
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to examine self-esteem, communication skills, and approaches to conflict resolution of trained student mediators in a conflict resolution program. This study also assessed the perceived transferability of conflict management information and skills from the school to the home environment. Indicators were the frequency, duration, and intensity of sibling conflicts reported by conflict managers and their parents.
The subjects in this study consisted of 60 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at two different middle schools in the state of Iowa. Thirty were trained as conflict managers and assigned to the experimental group, and thirty to …
The Relationship Between The Constructs Of Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept, Tina M. Schroeder
The Relationship Between The Constructs Of Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept, Tina M. Schroeder
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study investigated 13 preservice regular education reading teachers' use of curriculum-based measurement (CBM) data under specified conditions. Conditions included: (a) providing preservice teachers with 75 minutes of training in the use of CBM in reading, (b) biweekly CBM administration and graphing during a 10-week practicum experience, and (c) concomitant use of other reading measures [e. g., Reading Miscue Inventory (RMI), Running Records (RR)]. Exit interviews indicated that preservice teachers made use of CBM data in some, but not all, of the important ways suggested in the research literature. Preservice teachers provided the following positive ratings of CBM: (a) CBM …
A Behavioural Checklist For The Measurement Of Self-Esteem In The Classroom, Dawn Metcalfe
A Behavioural Checklist For The Measurement Of Self-Esteem In The Classroom, Dawn Metcalfe
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The study sets out to develop a behavioural checklist for the measurement of self-esteem in the classroom. The importance of self-esteem to learning and adjustment to life's situation is well recognised by educational practitioners and theorists. This study examined the concept of self-esteem and the need for an objective instrument to measure the concept in children aged 6 to 12 years. The development of the instrument was in four phases and in every phase the input and feedback of classroom teachers was considered crucial The resulting instrument therefore comprises descriptions which are entirely teacher-generated. At several points in the process …
Causal Influences Of Mental Overload And Self-Efficacy On Academic Performance, Elizabeth Jane Barbo
Causal Influences Of Mental Overload And Self-Efficacy On Academic Performance, Elizabeth Jane Barbo
Theses Digitization Project
In the past, literature has proposed relationships between several different factors. Multiple roles influence performance and stress, good performance increases self-efficacy, high self-efficacy increases performance, and increased amounts of stress decrease performance. While performance can be measured in different ways, the literature has supported using academic achievement as a performance indicator.

A Creative Thinking And Writing Analysis Workshop As An Alternative Detention Activity To Silence And Work Interventions Used For Behavioral Change In High School, George J. Matranga
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research project was to investigate the effectiveness of after school detention as a disciplinary tool for handling student misbehavior at school. Detention is defined as holding a student during their own free time, such as after school. The subjects of the study were problematic students assigned to detention for inappropriate behavior, i.e. violating a school rule or regulation.
As a school practitioner conducted this research the study highlights the practitioner's perspective for effective student discipline management in developing and maintaining a positive school climate. In many regards, the study was meant to provide information to the …

The Relationships Between Experience, Credentials, Ego Development, And Conceptual Level Of National Certified Counselors, Joel Foster Diambra
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate National Certified Counselors and relationships between their experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Benefits to continuing education requirements, developmental growth, and counselor insight were identified as justification for the research. It was hypothesized that there would be statistically significant positive correlations between counselor experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Four hundred (400) National Certified Counselors were randomly selected and contacted by mail survey using a General Questionnaire, Loevinger's Sentence Completion Test, and Hunt's Paragraph Completion Method. One hundred and thirty-four (134) responses were received. Significant correlations were found supporting previous …
