The Teaching Of Communications Skills In Relation To The Cultural Background Of Mexican Migrants, Irene Hlousek

The purpose of this study was to objectively describe a method of teaching English communication skills to Spanish-speaking Mexican-migrant adults. A program of experiences was developed to teach communication skills to Mexican-migrant adults. An attempt was made to overcome the difficulties these adults face in learning a second language and to bring about the changes in attitude necessary for ready adaptation to the culture in which they now find themselves. The important factor in teaching communication skills is the building of an adequate English vocabulary.

This experiment was devised as a possible means of overcoming reading difficulties in children who come from a low socio-economic and cultural background and, at the same time, involving their parents in the reading instructional program. Weekly sessions, involving informal reading activities, were attended by the parents and their children. The purpose of this study was to find out to what extent the transfer program has benefited participating students. The hypothesis was that Negro elementary students participating in the transfer program would make more academic progress by 1968 than would Negro elementary students from the same home schools who did not transfer. All students had to be in grade four in 1966. Students must have taken a standardized achievement test in 1966 and 1968.
