The purpose of this qualitative, transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of middle school teachers in the United States implementing the flipped classroom model (FCM) when students are not coming to class prepared. The FCM is a framework in which students engage in passive learning activities at home by watching videos uploaded by their teachers so that they can engage in active learning activities in the classroom. The theory guiding this study is Vygotsky’s social-constructivism theory as it promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills through collaboration, which are very important skills required of today’s 21st century learners. …

Abstract

This mixed methods study aimed to categorize and analyze the frequencies and percentages of complex thinking in the PARCC practices assessments grades 3 and 4. The Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrix was employed for the first part of the study to code each of the PARCC assessment questions in Language Arts and Mathematics Grades 3 and 4 based on pre-existing codes. Deductive category application was utilized to connect the language from Hess’ Cognitive Rigor Matrix to the language of the questions in the tests. This paper provides a didactical model for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to support the acquisition of 21st century skills such as critical thinking. For this purpose, the didactic triangle as a model of teaching and learning is extended to allow for the consideration of experts, resources, literacy and an all-encompassing learning space when designing digital learning settings. The “Dr. Internet” MOOC is presented as a case study for the proposed didactic model. Montessori education remains isolated from most educational research. Montessori classroom assessment has failed to embrace most educational research because of philosophical differences about assessment practices. Specifically, 21st Century Skills may be the future of American education and a possible correlation with Montessori on philosophical values exists. A framework for Montessori classroom assessment that references 21st Century Skills and educational research needs to be created so that Montessori educators can understand what components of traditional/21st Century Skills classroom assessment are already implemented within a Montessori classroom.
