Identifying Organizational Containment And Its Effect On The Career Paths Of Black Educators, Risha Berry Jan 2014

Identifying Organizational Containment And Its Effect On The Career Paths Of Black Educators, Risha Berry

Theses and Dissertations

The racial composition of the school workforce is the product of a complex interaction of social forces. School constituencies such as parents, students, and teachers impact new leader preferences. Their ideas influence decisions regarding who fits into school administration and who doesn't (Williams & Loeb, 2012). These "fit" preferences can shape school district ethos, which then influences access to social networks (Tooms, 2010). Limited entry to these networks may produce multiple disadvantages, particularly for Black educators. One way to think of this access is through the concept of containment. Restricted data from the 2011-12 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) will …

The Impact Of Pre-K Programs On Student Achievement And Instructional Leadership In Rural Mississippi School Districts, Jeremy Eugene Stinson Jan 2011

The Impact Of Pre-K Programs On Student Achievement And Instructional Leadership In Rural Mississippi School Districts, Jeremy Eugene Stinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2011, Mississippi continues to be the only state in the southern region without a single state-funded pre-k program (NIEER, 2007), and all preschool funds in the state are currently allotted to Head Start. Witte and Trowbridge (2004) warned that the combination of pre-k programs could be the reason for highly fragmented systems of state funding, policies, and regulations. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate whether differences exist between preschool groups in three North Mississippi school districts and to determine the degree to which stakeholders in the programs practice instructional leadership. From a quantitative perspective, the …

Getting To Finished: Strategies To Ensure Completion Of The Doctoral Dissertation, Barbara Holmes, Lillian Robinson, Angela D. Seay

Education Doctorate Faculty Works

This paper reports the results of focus group conversations with thirty-four doctoral students enrolled in an educational leadership program. Doctoral students were asked to provide suggestions and strategies used to complete the doctoral dissertation. The results of these conversations reinforce the value of the collaborative cohort and the proactive interdependence students experienced as a result of working together. These findings highlight the need to examine how doctoral students experience the university context particularly as it relates to the dissertation phase of study.

In Defense Of The Public Schools, Emil E. Samuelson May 1945

In Defense Of The Public Schools, Emil E. Samuelson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

It is apparent that American public education is under attack. Furthermore, there is plenty of evidence that this attack is mounting, for criticism of educational practices seems to be steadily increasing. It would be well to recognize this trend and to analyze the criticisms carefully. For it isn't likely that these criticisms can be entirely dismissed as an inevitable part of "war hysteria" even though the world war has undoubtedly provided a favorable climate for criticism of public education.
