Playing It Safe In Secondary School Athletic Programs, David Alan Dolph

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

School business officials play a critical role in ensuring that district assets are protected and that students and staff have a safe environment in which to learn and work. In their role as risk managers, school business officials work closely with the board of education and fellow administrators to identify and track potential risks, develop plans to mitigate those risks, and perform regular risk assessments to determine how risks have changed.

Some risks are inherent in all school systems. For example, students on the playground, buses on the roads, chemicals in the science labs, even food in the cafeteria pose …

Controlling Hispanic Dropouts: A Leader’S Responsibility, Edgar Rodriquez, Vance Vaughn, Wesley Hickey

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Hispanic population is increasing in the United States and especially in Texas. As the population grows, so does the number of students enrolled in our public schools, and Hispanic students are already the majority in some states. Thus, one would expect a high increase of Hispanic graduates, but this is not the case. Surprisingly, Hispanic students are dropping out of school at an alarming rate. Why are these students dropping out of school? What can educational leaders do to prevent this phenomenon? Qualitative research methods were used to analyze the reasons 21 Hispanic students dropped out of school in …

Merit Pay: A Discussion On The Issues, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter Apr 2007

Merit Pay: A Discussion On The Issues, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

Merit pay is a timely education policy issue being discussed by educators and legislators and in schools and statehouses across the country. Merit pay is a broad term used to describe a variety of incentive-based K-12 educator compensation plans. Given that the opposing sides of this controversial issue passionately argue its validity as a policy solution, how can policymakers decide whether to endorse such plans, and what does the research suggest are the features of effective plans? In an effort to educate policymakers about the issue in general and to assist interested parties in evaluating proposed merit pay programs, the …

The Continued Evolution Of Tenure Policies For Clinical Faculty At U.S. Medical Schools, Sarah A. Bunton, William T. Mallon Mar 2007

The Continued Evolution Of Tenure Policies For Clinical Faculty At U.S. Medical Schools, Sarah A. Bunton, William T. Mallon

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

For the past several decades, financial uncertainty, changes in health care delivery and reimbursement, and changing workforce needs have prompted medical schools to continually refine their appointment and tenure policies. This Analysis in Brief examines recent data for medical school clinical faculty by describing tenure systems, the financial guarantee associated with tenure, and probationary period length. Data come from two sources: first, responses to the AAMC’s 2005 Faculty Personnel Policies Survey of the 125 LCME-accredited U.S. medical schools. The survey instrument consists of questions about policies and procedures related to appointment, tenure, and compensation structures for medical school faculty. Deans …

Cancellations Tough To Call, Even For The Best School Chiefs - Silberman Retains Credibility By Not Trying To Snow Anyone, Richard E. Day

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The best school superintendents spend their waking hours communicating and driving district personnel to increase student achievement. They want high attendance, not low attendance. They want more school days, not fewer. They want to have school. The hardest decisions a school superintendent has to make are those that go beyond his control, such as deciding whether to call off school when bad weather threatens.
