Researching Social Work With Indigenous People In Australia: Across Worldviews, Across Time, Across The Table, John Whyte, Jacynta Krakouer

Jacynta Krakouer

The use of comparative research by social work dates back to the profession's origins. However, its nature has changed over time, reflecting the profession's changing contexts. With the globalisation of social work, professional practice has expanded outside of the profession's western origins to encompass cross-worldview settings. Each contextual expansion has meant a greater complexity of the comparative research factors to be considered. In this chapter, the key conceptual and process challenges encountered while conducting the Australian Research Council-funded project From Colonisation to Conciliation: A Collaborative Examination of Social Work Practice with Indigenous Populations will be examined. This overview will explore …

Let's Talk About Sex, Mark Butler Dec 2008

Let's Talk About Sex, Mark Butler

Mark Butler

With 10 per cent of students now sexually active by the age of 14, it is time we took sex education seriously, according to comedian Mark Butler. A recent report by Marie Stopes International found that Australian students are not getting adequate sex education in school. Some are not getting any at all and those who do get it often get it too late. The author believes that teachers should get students talking about sex as early as possible and the teachings should not be restricted to 'sex for procreation' but 'sex for recreation' and the pleasure it can bring. …

Academic English As A Second Language For Gaps, Gulbahar Beckett

Gulbahar Beckett

For decades, research has pointed to significant gaps between African American and White
student academic achievement. In this article, I critically discuss the literature on African
American student academic achievement from pedagogical, cultural, and sociolinguistic
perspectives. I then argue for a stronger linguistic and pedagogical approach to bridge the gap
and propose a curriculum idea that teachers may find useful should they decide to adopt this
approach.

Purpose: This study provides milestones for phonological development in African American English (AAE) speakers learning Mainstream American English (MAE) as a second dialect for use by practicing speech-language pathologists. DSLT items tested all consonant segments and many clusters of MAE in initial and final position. The age at which each dialect group reached 90% criterion for each segment in each position …

Financial Stability, Trade Openness And The Structure Of Banks’ Shareholders, Claudiu T. Albulescu

Claudiu T Albulescu

The adverse effect of financial crises upon the world’s economies represented the background for the development of a wide economic literature on financial stability. The assessment of this phenomenon stands for a complex exercise, as many techniques can be used for this purpose. Such a technique is the construction of an aggregate financial stability index which allows for a comparison between financial systems stability. Based on an aggregate index and on a panel of data, we show that, for several Eastern European Countries, the financial stability is largely influenced by the trade openness and by the quality of banks’ shareholders. …
