Well-Being In Graduate Health Professions Education: Exploration Of Programmatic Interventions, The Student Experience, And Students’ Support Preferences, Katherine Schultz

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Healthcare provider well-being is a growing area of professional concern. Beyond the negative impacts on the clinicians’ health, stress, burnout, and other manifestations of decreased clinician well-being can directly affect the quality of patient care. Research suggests that well-being concerns begin in graduate health professions education programs, during which students undergo rigorous academic and clinical training for future careers as clinicians. The aim of this study was to explore programmatic interventions to promote well-being in graduate health professions education and the students’ experiences of well-being while enrolled in graduate health professions programs.

This study was conducted across three phases. Phase …

Global Perspective Inventory Analysis On International Education Experience: Differences Between Colombian Mba Alumni Who Participated In A Dual Degree Program And Those Who Did Not, Luis N. Romero

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to describe differences in global perspective-taking between MBA alums who graduated with a dual degree from both a Colombian university and a U.S. university and those who did not participate in the program. The Global Perspective Inventory (GPI) is a survey tool that evaluates global competencies across three domains of development: cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal dimensions. To go deeper into the study, a U-test was implemented to compare the means for a nonparametric sample. A comparative analysis of data with the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test found no difference between Colombian PRIME MBA students who completed an …

The Effects Of Rater Training On Rater Effects And Validity Of Direct Behavior Ratings, Abigail E. Pruitt Jan 2022

The Effects Of Rater Training On Rater Effects And Validity Of Direct Behavior Ratings, Abigail E. Pruitt

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Educators have a responsibility to accurately measure student behavior in order to identify students in need of additional behavioral support. Current behavior screening tools can be lengthy or difficult to complete, and Direct Behavior Ratings (DBRs) offer a solution. However, DBRs are rater-mediated assessments, prone to rater effects. Rater training methods can be used to mitigate these rater effects, but previous research has not investigated the best training method for reduction of rater effects. Additionally, Many Facet Rasch Measurement (MFRM) provides an opportunity to adjust student ratings in response to individual rater tendencies of severity and leniency. Therefore, the primary …

Community College Full-Time Faculty Members’ Perceptions Of Course Grading, April C. Zawlocki Jan 2021

Community College Full-Time Faculty Members’ Perceptions Of Course Grading, April C. Zawlocki

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study examined community college full-time faculty members’ perceptions of grading and reporting student learning via course grades using a mixed methods approach. The research questions that guided this study asked about the differences that exist in community college full-time faculty members’ perceptions of grading by different academic subdivision, by having or not having a degree in education, and by gender. Additionally, the study examined how perceptions of the purpose of grades differ among faculty members. The study also sought to find out which criteria were used to determine course grades and what experiences faculty members attribute to learning how …

Impact Of Passage Effects On Oral Reading Fluency Administration And Scoring, Esther H. Yi Jan 2021

Impact Of Passage Effects On Oral Reading Fluency Administration And Scoring, Esther H. Yi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Reading curriculum-based measures (R-CBM) are frequently used to assess reading proficiency. However, the utility of these measures is predicated on the assumption that within-grade-level passages have equal text difficulty levels. Spurious changes in the number of words students read correctly depending on what passage is administered are widely documented and strongly suggest that this assumption is not tenable. Rather, passage effects (i.e., error variance in R-CBM scores due to unequal passage difficulty levels) can artificially increase/depress scores and mask true trends in progress monitoring data. Prior research has focused on readability formulas or statistical equating methods based on classical test …

Principals’ Legal Literacy About Tenured-Teacher Evaluation In Illinois, Elizabeth Pohlmann Jan 2020

Principals’ Legal Literacy About Tenured-Teacher Evaluation In Illinois, Elizabeth Pohlmann

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the legal literacy of principals related to the evaluation of tenured teachers. The quality of teachers, while varied, is important. The evaluation of tenured teachers provides a significant opportunity to impact the quality of teachers and the teacher workforce. This study explores principals’ knowledge of the legal framework in Illinois to identify gaps in knowledge regarding the tenured teacher evaluation process and the associated legal constraints (what do they have to do) and opportunities (what can they do).

In this study, a survey aligned with the legal requirements for tenured teacher evaluation is used to measure principal …

Impact Of Standardized Test Performance On Success In Introductory College Physics Classes, Michael Gattone

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This research project looks to analyze the ability of the ACT and other standardized tests to predict student success in introductory physics classes at Northern Illinois University (NIU). Admissions data from NIU was collected by the physics department from a total of 4262 students enrolled in introductory physics courses during the Fall 2012 semester until the Spring 2017 semester. This data includes academic level, gender, race/ethnicity, composite ACT score, high school GPA, and final letter grade. In particular, the composite ACT score of students was directly compared with their final letter grade from the student’s introductory physics class. The student …

Holistic Analysis Of The Social, Emotional, And Academic Development Of At-Risk Students In A Self-Regulated Learning Instructional Environment, Jennifer K. Macek Jan 2019

Holistic Analysis Of The Social, Emotional, And Academic Development Of At-Risk Students In A Self-Regulated Learning Instructional Environment, Jennifer K. Macek

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The testing an accountability system that plagues the current educational atmosphere has done little to improve outcomes for the general population, rather, it has increased harm to our nation’s most vulnerable populations. As districts grapple with accountability mandates and pressures to improve test scores the number of students excluded from traditional schools and sent to alternative programs continues to grow. Research shows that the majority of programs for at-risk youth are little more than graduation factories that do not adequately prepare students for active participation in democratic society.

This study used a mixed methods design to explore an alternative program …

The Role Of Administrative Observation, Evaluative Evidence And Procedural Due Process In Illinois, Before And After The Passage Of The Performance Evaluation Reform Act (Pera) And Senate Bill 7 (Sb7)., Christopher J. Adkins

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the impact of the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) and Senate Bill 7 (SB7) on evaluative practices utilized with tenured educators within Illinois. Given the sense of urgency brought to bear on teacher quality from laws such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Race To The Top (RTTT), revisions to the law that include streamlined processes, uniform evidence gathering and interpretation, and student growth measures are mainstays of legislation like PERA and SB7. Akin to many states, Illinois schools are working to institutionalize these concepts into everyday practices.

In reviewing the changes made to the Illinois …
