Queensland Teachers’ Conceptions Of Assessment: The Impact Of Policy Priorities On Teacher Attitudes, Gavin Brown, Robert Lake, Gabrielle Matters Dec 2010

Queensland Teachers’ Conceptions Of Assessment: The Impact Of Policy Priorities On Teacher Attitudes, Gavin Brown, Robert Lake, Gabrielle Matters

Dr Gabrielle Matters

The conceptions Queensland teachers have about assessment purposes were surveyed in 2003 with an abridged version of the Teacher Conceptions of Assessment Inventory. Multi-group analysis found that a model with four factors, somewhat different in structure to previous studies, was statistically different between Queensland primary and (lower) secondary teachers. Primary teachers agreed more than secondary teachers that ‘assessment improves teaching and learning’, while the latter agreed more that it ‘makes students accountable’. The inter-correlation of ‘assessment is irrelevant’ to ‘makes students accountable’ was statistically stronger for primary teachers. Teacher beliefs reflected the differing practices of assessment by level of schooling.

The International Civic And Citizenship Education Study (Iccs), Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley Dec 2010

The International Civic And Citizenship Education Study (Iccs), Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) investigated the ways in which young people are prepared for, and consequently ready and able to undertake their roles as citizens. Consequently, it studied student knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as affective and behavioral aspects of civics and citizenship such as value beliefs, attitudes, intended behaviors and current activities related to civic and citizenship education. Contextual data from education systems and schools were analyzed to help explain variation in these outcome variables. ICCS built on the previous IEA studies of civic education (Arnadeo et. al., 2002; Schulz …

Iccs Test Development, Julian Fraillon

Julian Fraillon

The ICCS civic knowledge assessment was developed over an 18-month period from October 2006 to April 2008. Most of the ICCS test-item development was conducted by the international study center (ISC) at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in collaboration with the study’s national research coordinators (NRCs) and the Project Advisory Committee (PAC). This chapter provides a detailed description of the test-development process, review procedures, and the test design implemented for the ICCS field trial and main survey. Table 2.1 provides an overview of the test-development processes and timeline.

An Ant's Eye View : Some Pluses And Minuses, Dave Tout Dec 2010

An Ant's Eye View : Some Pluses And Minuses, Dave Tout

David (Dave) Tout

This article provides a history of adult numeracy teaching, looking back at the rise and development if adult numeracy provision, mainly in Victoria, from the perspective of an ANT (adult numeracy teacher), beginning in the late 1970s. The author then describes what lies on the horizon, what lessons adult educators can learn, and what opportunities might lie ahead for adult numeracy in the next decade or so. The article contains an exposition on the benefits of explicitly recognising and supporting numeracy within the language, literacy and numeracy equation. The author argues that, given the Australian data from ALLS, there is …

Teaching Future Teachers: A Model Workshop For Doctoral Education, Julia Pryce Dec 2010

Teaching Future Teachers: A Model Workshop For Doctoral Education, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

Doctoral student training has become focused in recent years on acquiring subject-area knowledge and research skills, rather than on teaching. This shift often leaves aspiring junior faculty feeling unprepared to address the demanding pedagogical requirements of the professoriate. In the area of social work, few programs con- tain a structured, required program of study that addresses issues unique to teaching in a school of social work. This article out- lines a doctoral teaching workshop as a model framework for social work doctoral programs. Suggestions are provided for ways to incorporate such an effort into current social work doctoral education.

The Graduate Pathways Survey: New Insights On Education And Employment Outcomes Five Years After Bachelor Degree Completion, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards Dec 2010

The Graduate Pathways Survey: New Insights On Education And Employment Outcomes Five Years After Bachelor Degree Completion, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards

Dr Daniel Edwards

The development of a strong and vibrant knowledge-based economy is linked in direct ways with successful graduate outcomes. Building evidence-based insights on such outcomes plays an important role in shaping planning and practice. With this broad objective in mind, this article analyses findings from the Graduate Pathways Survey, the first national study in Australia of bachelor degree graduate outcomes five years after course completion. It begins by discussing key rationales and research contexts to position the study internationally and in terms of research on graduate careers, quality assurance and planning. Focus is then turned to highlighting findings from the study, …

Students With A Disability: The Potential Of Kidsmatter, Katherine Dix

Dr Katherine Dix

This chapter draws key findings from a South Australian study, KidsMatter for Students with a Disability, in order to extend the discussion on whether whole-school mental health promotion initiatives are equally supportive of students with and without a disability. This discussion contributes to overcoming the lack of evidence-based research in this area and proposes new opportunities to better support all students with disabilities, whether identified or unrecognised.

A Semantic Analysis Approach For Assessing Professionalism Using Free-Form Text Entered Online, Roger H. Blake Dec 2010

A Semantic Analysis Approach For Assessing Professionalism Using Free-Form Text Entered Online, Roger H. Blake

Roger H. Blake

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to measure professionalism for the purpose of assessing a professional development program. Soft skills such as professionalism are increasingly recognized as important, yet measuring and assessing these skills, typically best acquired experientially, has remained challenging. Following established research, we conceptualize professionalism as a construct with the dimensions of autonomy, commitment, belief in public service, self-regulation, and the use of a professional organization as a major referent. We demonstrate how these dimensions can be expressed and the professionalism of free-form text responses measured. These responses are reflections submitted online by participants in …

Portfolio Management Districts And Rebuilding Inequality, Brian R. Beabout Dec 2010

Portfolio Management Districts And Rebuilding Inequality, Brian R. Beabout

Brian R. Beabout

Despite over fifty years of near-constant educational reform movements in the USA, most attempts at improving outcomes in urban public schools have meet with predictable failure (Sarason, 1990). The recently coined term Portfolio Management Models (Bulkley, Henig & Levin, 2010) describes a reform to citywide governance in which the district serves as a coordinator of public education services, rather than the single provider of these services. Cities such as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New Orleans are noted for having schools run by a variety of groups including national and local charter operators, magnets and neighborhood schools run by the …

Blended Learning Internationalization From The Commonwealth: An Australian And Canadian Collaborative Case Study, Shelley Kinash, Susan Crichton Dec 2010

Blended Learning Internationalization From The Commonwealth: An Australian And Canadian Collaborative Case Study, Shelley Kinash, Susan Crichton

Professor Shelley Kinash

This case depiction addresses the contentious issue of providing culturally and globally accessible teaching and learning to international students in universities in the Commonwealth nations of Australia and Canada. The chapter describes the university systems and cultures, the barriers to authentic higher education internationalization, and the problems frequently experienced by international students. Two university cases are presented and analysed to depict and detail blended learning approaches (face-to-face combined with e-learning) as exemplars of culturally and globally accessible higher education and thereby ideologically grounded internationalization. Lessons learned are presented at the systems level and as teaching and learning solutions designed to …

A Meta-Analysis Of Peer-Mediated Interventions For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jie Zhang, John J. Wheeler Dec 2010

A Meta-Analysis Of Peer-Mediated Interventions For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jie Zhang, John J. Wheeler

John J. Wheeler

This meta-analysis investigated the efficacy of peer-mediated interventions for promoting social interactions among children from birth to eight years of age diagnosed with ASD. Forty-five single-subject design studies were analyzed and the effect sizes were calculated by the regression model developed by Allison and Gorman (1993). The overall effect sizes suggest that peer-mediated interventions were highly effective. Further categorical comparisons suggest that these interventions were more effective in enhancing social responses in younger boys, when older male siblings served as interventionists, when the interventions took place in the home, when peer modeling was used, and when consideration was given to …

Students As Teachers: What Faculty Learn By Living On Campus, Rishi R. Sriram, Frank Shushok Jr., Jennifer Perkins, Laine Scales Dec 2010

Students As Teachers: What Faculty Learn By Living On Campus, Rishi R. Sriram, Frank Shushok Jr., Jennifer Perkins, Laine Scales

Rishi Sriram, Ph.D.

In its recent history, American higher education has segmented the student experience, especially as research universities have grown in size and complexity. To increase the integration of undergraduate learning experiences, many efforts have combined the curricular and co-curricular worlds of students. In one practice, housing and residence life staff invite faculty members to live with students in residence halls and participate in the leadership of those communities. While research has found faculty-in-residence programs to positively impact students, what is the impact on faculty? This study examined the impact that living in residence has on faculty, their pedagogy, and their philosophy …

Embracing Literacy-Based Teaching: A Longitudinal Study Of The Conceptual Development Of Novice Foreign Language Teachers, Heather W. Allen Dec 2010

Embracing Literacy-Based Teaching: A Longitudinal Study Of The Conceptual Development Of Novice Foreign Language Teachers, Heather W. Allen

Heather Willis Allen

Taking a sociocultural theory perspective (Lantolf & Thorne, 2006), this longitudinal study explored the conceptual development of two teaching assistants in a university foreign language department in relation to literacy and language teaching. Findings illustrate the "twisting path" (Vygotsky, 1987, p. 156) of concept development experienced by the two first-time teachers of Spanish as their understandings of literacy and efforts to use tools of literacy evolved over several years. Evidence of the ability to think through concepts of literacy in structuring teaching practices did not emerge for either participant until four semesters after they started teaching, illustrating what a gradual …
