Professional Learning Of School Leaders In Australia, Michelle Anderson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Bill Mulford, D Gurr Apr 2010

Professional Learning Of School Leaders In Australia, Michelle Anderson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Bill Mulford, D Gurr

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

In Australia, the professional learning of school leaders has seldom mattered more. The importance of school leadership stems both from an increasing emphasis on improving schools and a foreshadowed crisis in attracting sufficient quality applicants to principal class positions. Nevertheless, it is clear that the preparation of future school leaders needs to be a priority, particularly given the likely retirement of most of the current school principals over the next five to ten years. A key challenge for developers of school leadership programs is to identify those factors that are of central importance in the preparation of school leaders, including …

Evaluating The Work Of Teachers In Australian Schools : Vision And Reality, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson, Rod Chadbourne

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Given the importance of effective teacher evaluation to successful teaching and learning, it is surprising that many of the research findings in this area are being ignored. Discredited procedures continue to survive and are even born again within reinvented systems of bureaucratic and managerial control This paper argues for an approach to teacher evaluation that reflects the findings of contemporary research. It falls into three parts. The first part reviews the relevant literature and distills some features and principles that underpin successful policy and practice. The second part describes a case study that was part of a research project, begun …

Supporting New Teachers In Victorian Schools : Making The Teacher Registration Process An Opportunity For Professional Learning, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson, Jenny Wilkinson

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

The VIT Standards and Professional Learning Project was seen to be leading to improvements in teaching practice across schools and playing a major role in reinforcing and/or establishing a culture of professional collaboration and professional learning in schools. That is likely to lead to improved student outcomes. The role of the school leadership is clearly very important in this as in any other major innovation. Principals and mentors were very positive about the program, and consistently reported higher levels of satisfaction with its implementation than did the Provisionally Registered Teachers. Primary teachers were in general more positive than secondary teachers. …

Teacher Education Accreditation : A Review Of National And International Trends And Practices, Lawrence Ingvarson, Alison Elliott, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Phillip Mckenzie

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

In June 2005 the National Institute for Quality Teaching and School Leadership commissioned ACER to conduct a project to provide advice on developing a national system for the accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs. The project brief fell into two main sections. The first was to conduct a literature review examining: (a) Current accreditation and course approval policies and practices in Australia to identify similarities and differences and implications for a national accreditation system; (b) Developments in the accreditation of teacher education programs in other countries and whether any of the identified approaches could provide a basis for a national …

Over The Rainbow : A Rewarding Career Structure, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz Apr 2010

Over The Rainbow : A Rewarding Career Structure, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Historically, there has been little gold at the beginning or end of the career rainbow for teachers, and not a lot of colour in between. Until recently, teachers who wanted to advance into leadership positions were obliged to give most of their attention to management and administration. Because the teaching knowledge base was devalued, many teachers saw little point in trying to become skilled practitioners of their craft. Systems tend to reward what they value, and it is difficult to escape from the conclusion that, in terms of reward, the value placed on excellence in teaching has been very low. …

Leadership Courses : Do They Deliver?, Michelle Anderson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz Apr 2010

Leadership Courses : Do They Deliver?, Michelle Anderson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

The authors examine professional learning courses for principals and ask whether they really deliver what they claim they do. Developers of professional learning need first to have guiding conceptions of school leadership. In recent years, a number of school systems in Australia and overseas have established standards frameworks that spell out leadership knowledge and skills. These can provide a bridge between research and practice, and they are one way to capture what is currently known and valued about the field of school leadership. The authors look at the most effective ways in which such standards can be used to support …

Estandares Profesionales De Practica Y Su Importancia Para La Ensenaza, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

For more than three decades educators and policy makers in Australia have been interested in the development of professional standards for teachers. In recent years teacher associations in Australia have been developing their own standards to gain more influence over quality assurance in their profession. This paper aims to provide a broad overview of teaching standards and their use. It begins with an explanation of the idea of teaching standards, pointing out that standards are both statements about what is valued and tools for measurement. A distinction is drawn between ‘profession-wide’ teaching standards and standards developed by agencies like employers, …

Leadership In Catholic Schools : Development Framework And Standards Of Practice, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

This study emphasises the connections between the work of leaders and the core functions of schooling. It draws these connections in the context of the values and beliefs of the Catholic Church and the mission of Catholic schools in their communities. The Framework has been developed with two main purposes in mind. The first is to guide the professional learning and development of aspiring leaders and to encourage teachers to consider movement into leadership positions. The second is to unite Catholic schools around a vision of agreed leadership practices for leaders – 'the standards' – and to provide a foundation …
