Many teachers as well as students feel that our system of evaluation is far from perfect, but these same people have offered no alternative workable plan which would in whole or in part relieve the objections. Hopefully this study will demonstrate a philosophy of the teaching of mathematics in conjunction with a companion plan of evaluation which will relieve many of the basic objections while at the same time produce more learning. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of two reading programs, Sullivan's Programmed Reading and the Psycholinguistic Color System, and to try to determine if one program did, in effect, have a particular value over the other when used with children in an intermediate special education program. It was the purpose of this study to ascertain the reading comprehension of randomly selected fifth grade students who had all read identical reading selections of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, and who were asked to respond orally to open-ended questions. The investigator hypothesized that children from different cultural backgrounds would bring different interpretations to identical reading selections when these children were asked open-ended questions.

Cooperative Work Programs of many types exist at different educational levels in the United States. Specifically, the Cooperative Work Programs in Office Administration have undergone a rapid increase in this country over the last decade. This study is designed to determine whether or not the pupil retention policies presently practiced by the Tenino Elementary School are justifiable in terms of benefiting the retained student academically. It was hypothesized that the academic gains of nonpromoted students will be considerably less than the gains made by promoted students when compared according to achievement tests results. This paper surveys research on the factors that influence the readability of primary books, the efforts that have been made to measure it, and the comparative reliability of subjective judgment and objective analysis of the difficulty of certain primary books. An appraisal by the Fry Readability Graph is recommended for a first approximation of the difficulty of a book, to be followed by judgment decisions regarding concepts, interest and other considerations, to make a suitable match of book to child.

A study designed: (1) to determine whether the building level Role Definition produced by the ad hoc Joint Standards Committee was representative of the roles performed by the media personnel, and (2) to determine the role duties of district media personnel. The study showed the Role Definition to be representative and the district level proposal emphasizing administrative and coordinative responsibilities. It was recommended a future study be conducted to further the knowledge of the role/duties of district media personnel.

Two experiments were performed to discover the affect of equalization of positive and negative instances in the presentation of stimuli for Attribute Identification and Rule Learning problems. 56 student volunteers from CWSC were used as subjects. Stimuli were presented to them either according to the traditional truth table representation (four classes for every four trials) or by presenting an equal number of positive and negative instances. The results showed that tasks requiring identification of the relevant attributes among stimulus characteristics were performed better if the stimuli were equalized for positive and negative instances.

Teachers in elementary schools often assert that they could teach more successfully if no child under six years of age was admitted to first grade. While teaching kindergarten this writer also found many parents of kindergarten age children quite concerned about the "best" age for their child to enter kindergarten. Besides age there seemed to be concern in other areas such as physical size, coordination, and emotional maturity. However, most school districts in Washington set chronological age as the major requirement for school admission.
