How do faculty meet the “net generation” learning needs? The challenge of engaging students was accomplished in this senior leadership course using a variety of strategies. Course requirements included a classroom presentation, multimedia applications, and a quality improvement project completed in a 90 hour practicum. Student-developed websites will be featured and evaluated for design, flow, evidence-based information, credibility, currency, and relevancy to practice. Learning outcomes will be assessed using undergraduate curriculum foundations. Participants will be invited to share strategies that were successful for them in engaging the net generation in meaningful coursework.

Critical Components Of Transforming Teaching And Leading: Recognizing Educational Success Professional Excellence, And Collaborative Teaching (Respect), Samuel Hinton

Samuel Hinton

The purpose of this commentary is to disseminate significant content and to trigger discussion on the seven components of “A Blueprint for R.E.S.P.E.C.T. RECOGNIZING EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS, PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AND COLLABORATIVE TEACHING (2012).” Teacher preparation programs in the United States are moving in the direction of a clinical model. Some reasons for doing so are to facilitate teacher leadership and respect, earn higher professional recognition, acquire higher financial compensation, and embrace more collaborative teaching. This formula should lead to American students receiving an education that meets competitive global standards. Highly effective teachers accelerate student learning, close achievement gaps that have persisted …

International Service-Learning: A Synthesis Of The Research Literature, Roxanne Amerson Aug 2014

International Service-Learning: A Synthesis Of The Research Literature, Roxanne Amerson

Roxanne Amerson

There is an increased effort to prepare students in higher education to work and live in a global world, especially in health-related fields. The focus on global communities with a strong commitment to cultural diversity is a high priority for many institutions of higher learning. To reach this goal, educators need research-based pedagogies to facilitate optimal learning outcomes. This session will look beyond the literature that presents only personal experiences and anecdotal evidence of learning to review research conducted with international service-learning programs. The review of literature includes publications between 1998 and 2012 and documentation as a research study using …

Allies In Learning: Critical Insights Into The Importance Of Staff-Student Interactions In University Education, Sarah Richardson, Ali Radloff Aug 2014

Allies In Learning: Critical Insights Into The Importance Of Staff-Student Interactions In University Education, Sarah Richardson, Ali Radloff

Ali Radloff

Discussions of the quality of learning in university education often focus on curricula. Less attention is paid to the role of student–staff interactions. In a context in which a host of factors place pressure on the opportunities for students and staff to interact, it is important to use empirical insights to inform decisions about how to optimise learning. This paper uses data from a large survey of students and teaching staff in Australia to suggest that students and staff should be regarded as allies in learning. It investigates student reports to suggest that frequent interactions with those who teach them …

Parental Influences On Children’S Learning And Wellbeing At Home, Robert Simons Jul 2014

Parental Influences On Children’S Learning And Wellbeing At Home, Robert Simons

Dr Robert Simons

ACER's 2012-2014 evaluation of the Commonwealth Empowering Local Schools (ELS) initiative about increasing capacity and scope for 900 plus schools from all sectors to make decisions locally shows how some schools give parents more opportunities to engage in their children's learning at home through: (1) de-privatised classrooms; and (2) "flipping classrooms". The former gives parents online access to how teachers construct lesson plans. The latter enables teachers to segment lesson plans between home and school and parents to participate actively in their children's learning at home. The paper situates these findings between prior research into the impact of parental support …

The researchers framed this program evaluation project as an investigation of the influences on teaching practices of a teaching center program participants and non-participants. Changes in teaching practices and the motivations for these changes of fifteen randomly chosen faculty were studied. Session participants will develop and analyze brief case studies using abbreviated data sets and three of the methods that were used in the study. Through hands on analysis of data, session participants will enhance their ability to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the researchers and become familiar with useful analytical frameworks that they can use in their own research. …

To Rubric Or Not To Rubric: That Is The Question, Amy Kenworthy, George Hrivnak

George Hrivnak

Extract: In conclusion, although there are certainly a number of challenges associated with the effective utilization of rubrics, we agree that rubrics have the potential to be highly useful tools for faculty members to consider using. Our primary contribution to this scholarly discussion is to question the framing of rubrics as something akin to a panacea for assessment issues. They are not. As with any teaching tool, we believe faculty should never be forced to use tools that they are neither committed to nor adequately supported in the use of. Comfort and commitment to using a tool are critical components …

Virtual Patient Care: An Interprofessional Education Approach For Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, And Occupational Therapy Students, Michael J. Shoemaker Mar 2014

Virtual Patient Care: An Interprofessional Education Approach For Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, And Occupational Therapy Students, Michael J. Shoemaker

Michael J Shoemaker, PT, DPT, PhD, GCS

The purpose of this retrospective qualitative case report is to describe how a case-based, virtual patient interprofessional education (IPE) simulation activity was utilized to achieve physician assistant (PA), physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) student IPE learning outcomes. Following completion of a virtual patient case, 30 PA, 46 PT and 24 OT students were required to develop a comprehensive, written treatment plan and respond to reflective questions. A qualitative analysis of the submitted written assignment was used to determine whether IPE learning objectives were met. Student responses revealed three themes that supported the learning objectives of the IPE experience: …

Conversations And Stories, Marion Meiers Jan 2014

Conversations And Stories, Marion Meiers

Marion Meiers

Listening to stories, and talking with others about stories, have always been recognised as pleasurable activities for people of all ages. Activities that combine listening to stories and having conversations about the story can provide authentic and enjoyable opportunities in classrooms for teachers to observe and support students’ development in listening, talking and comprehending. A series of longitudinal research studies of young children’s developing knowledge and skills in literacy have been conducted at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) over the past decade. One of the significant challenges of this work has been to create opportunities for listening and …
