The Potential Of Perspectivism For Science Education, Jacob Pearce
The Potential Of Perspectivism For Science Education, Jacob Pearce
Dr Jacob Pearce
Many science teachers are presented with the challenge of characterising science as a dynamic, human endeavour. Perspectivism, as a hermeneutic philosophy of science, has the potential to be a learning tool for teachers as they elucidate the complex nature of science. Developed earlier by Nietzsche and others, perspectivism has recently re-emerged in the context of the philosophy of science in the work of Ronald Giere. Giere presents a compelling case that scientific theories and scientific observation are perspectival by using science itself. There are many tangible examples already present in science textbooks which, when approached in a certain way, offer …
Education Assessment In The 21st Century, Geoff Masters
Education Assessment In The 21st Century, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
The author argues that there is a need for significant reform in educational assessment. Instead of judging student success only in terms of year-level expectations, assessment needs to recognise the progress that all students can make in their learning, regardless of students' starting points.
Lessons Learned While Developing An Effective Culture Of Assessment For Library Instruction, Sonya S. Shepherd
Lessons Learned While Developing An Effective Culture Of Assessment For Library Instruction, Sonya S. Shepherd
Sonya S. Gaither
After testing and using multiple assessment surveys and tools over time to evaluate student learning after and satisfaction with library instruction, workshop attendees discussed lessons learned by an academic librarian attempting to develop a more effective culture of assessment for library instruction. The following was addressed: various surveys and tools used/tested why certain surveys and tools were selected for use and not others why certain surveys and tools worked better than others what were the lessons learned what assessment surveys and tools are being used after the lessons learned

University Student Experiences Of Mobile Learning: One Year Beyond Commencement, Shelley Kinash, Jeffrey Brand, Trishita Mathew, Ron Kordyban
Ron Kordyban
Mobile learning was an embedded component in the pedagogical design of an innovative undergraduate course, Digital Media and Society. This paper reports the experiences and perceptions of 189 students over three semesters in 2010 and 2011. Students were given the option of using their own devices or a university loaned iPad. The iPads were loaded with an electronic textbook and a mobile application of the learning management system. Feedback from students on mobility and the electronic text was positive and optimistic overall. However, the majority of these students were not convinced that the trial made a difference to their learning.

Dissertation: An Examination Of Community College Black Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Student Support Services And Identifying Methods For Improving Service Delivery, Dr. Charles Richburg
Dissertation: An Examination Of Community College Black Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Student Support Services And Identifying Methods For Improving Service Delivery, Dr. Charles Richburg
Dr. Charles W. Richburg III
Abstract Black male student athletes' enrolled in community colleges are a vastly understudied population. Statistically, the success rate of earning an associate degree and transferring to a four year institution of higher education is dismal. The focus of this study was to capture the perceptions of Black male student athletes and student support services providers as they pertained to access, use, and delivery of services. Another focus of this study was to identify ways in which Black male student athletes and student support services providers could help to improve delivery of those services. Participants for this study included three Black …

Goal-Free Evaluation: A Potential Model For The Evaluation Of Social Work Programs, Brandon Youker
Goal-Free Evaluation: A Potential Model For The Evaluation Of Social Work Programs, Brandon Youker
Brandon W. Youker Ph.D
Goal-free evaluation (GFE) is an evaluation model where the evaluator is deliberately kept from the stated (or implied) goals and objectives of the program; this is accomplished by appointing a screener to keep goal-related information from the goal-free evaluator. Screening the evaluator from program goals is designed to control bias inherent in goal-based evaluation (GBE), a bias that contaminates the evaluator’s ability to see the program’s true outcomes and true merit. Although GFE has been around for more than half a century, GBE continues to dominate evaluation practice and the literature on GFE remains sparse and highly theoretical. This article …

Which Form Of Assessment Provides The Best Information About Student Performance In Chemistry Examinations?, Ross Hudson, David Treagust
Which Form Of Assessment Provides The Best Information About Student Performance In Chemistry Examinations?, Ross Hudson, David Treagust
Dr Ross Hudson
Background: This study developed from observations of apparent achievement differences between male and female chemistry performances in a state university entrance examination. Male students performed more strongly than female students, especially in higher scores. Apart from the gender of the students, two other important factors that might influence student performance were format of questions (short-answer or multiple-choice) and type of questions (recall or application). Purpose: The research question addressed in this study was: Is there a relationship between performance in state university entrance examinations in chemistry and school chemistry examinations and student gender, format of questions--multiple-choice or short-answer, and conceptual …

Reflections On The Epic Challenge, 1989, Marion Meiers
Reflections On The Epic Challenge, 1989, Marion Meiers
Marion Meiers
The author reflects on the impact of an address by the noted Australian educator Garth Boomer to the 1989 joint national conference of the Australian Reading Association (now the Australian Literacy Educators' Association) and the Australian Association for the Teaching of English. It was challenging, explains the author, to be prompted to think of oneself, along with the whole audience, as 'advanced practitioners'. Garth acknowledged the conference participants as 'practicing or potential boundary riders, who have chosen to teach at the edges of your understandings rather than to operate from safe and stable ground'.
