John Keeves And The Australian Council For Educational Research, Rebecca Leech, John Ainley, Phillip Mckenzie, Patricia Knight, Jenny Barnes, Renee Otmar, Maureen O'Keefe

Dr Phillip McKenzie

This book has been produced as a tribute to the work and contributions of ACER's 3rd chief executive. Professor John Keeves on the occasion of his 85th birthday. Postgraduate Research Experience 2008 : The Report Of The Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire, Ali Radloff, Daniel Edwards, Hamish Coates, B Guthrie, C Tilbrook

Ali Radloff

Each year, graduates of Australian higher education institutions who have completed a doctoral or research masters degree are invited by their institution and Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) to respond to the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ) about four months after graduation. This report presents the results from the ninth PREQ survey conducted since 1999. The PREQ asks graduates to respond to 28 statements about seven aspects of their research degree. The first 27 statements measure the quality of supervision, the intellectual climate of the department in which the respondent studied, the development of generic skills, the quality of the infrastructure …

How Mobile Phones Help Learning In Secondary Schools, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young, Nadja Heym Dec 2008

How Mobile Phones Help Learning In Secondary Schools, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young, Nadja Heym

Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young

This research took place in 2007-8, at a time when mobile phones had become small, personal computers, providing clock, calendar, games, music player, Bluetooth connection, Internet access, and high-quality camera functions in addition to voice calls and short messaging. The Mobile Life Youth Report (2006) found that by the time they reach secondary school, 91% of 12 year olds in the UK have a mobile phone. Even though recent phone models, sometimes called ‘smart phones’, allow users to read pdf formats, spreadsheets and word-processed files, they have been more usually seen as disruptive, rather than useful, in school education

Pisa Science 2006 : International Results, John Cresswell Dec 2008

Pisa Science 2006 : International Results, John Cresswell

Dr John Cresswell

Throughout the world education authorities want to know the capacities that their students develop during their formative years at school. They want to know to what extent students have learned fundamental scientific concepts and theories and how well they can solve real-life problems involving science and technology. In order to provide answers to these questions, PISA provides an international benchmark. Unlike many traditional assessments of student performance in science, PISA is not limited to measuring students' mastery of specific science content. Instead, it measures the capacity of students to identify scientific issues, explain phenomena scientifically and use scientific evidence. These …

Pisa: An Introduction And Overview, Ross Turner Dec 2008

Pisa: An Introduction And Overview, Ross Turner

Ross Turner

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) provides such information  about 15-year-olds that can be both insightful and useful for science teachers.  PISA is a collaborative effort undertaken by member countries (and many nonmember  countries) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD),  which has its headquarters in Paris, France.  PISA measures 15-year-olds’ capabilities in reading literacy, mathematical literacy,  and scientific literacy every three years. PISA was first implemented in 2000, and the  most recent results are for the 2006 assessment. Each survey assesses one subject  area in depth. The other two subjects also are assessed at the same …

Researching Social Work With Indigenous People In Australia: Across Worldviews, Across Time, Across The Table, John Whyte, Jacynta Krakouer Dec 2008

Researching Social Work With Indigenous People In Australia: Across Worldviews, Across Time, Across The Table, John Whyte, Jacynta Krakouer

Jacynta Krakouer

The use of comparative research by social work dates back to the profession's origins. However, its nature has changed over time, reflecting the profession's changing contexts. With the globalisation of social work, professional practice has expanded outside of the profession's western origins to encompass cross-worldview settings. Each contextual expansion has meant a greater complexity of the comparative research factors to be considered. In this chapter, the key conceptual and process challenges encountered while conducting the Australian Research Council-funded project From Colonisation to Conciliation: A Collaborative Examination of Social Work Practice with Indigenous Populations will be examined. This overview will explore …
