The Victoria University (VU) Student Dividend was conceptualised by VU, and developed and implemented by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The student assessment and graduate survey were piloted in 2008. Professional Learning Of School Leaders In Australia, Michelle Anderson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Bill Mulford, D Gurr Apr 2010

Professional Learning Of School Leaders In Australia, Michelle Anderson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Bill Mulford, D Gurr

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

In Australia, the professional learning of school leaders has seldom mattered more. The importance of school leadership stems both from an increasing emphasis on improving schools and a foreshadowed crisis in attracting sufficient quality applicants to principal class positions. Nevertheless, it is clear that the preparation of future school leaders needs to be a priority, particularly given the likely retirement of most of the current school principals over the next five to ten years. A key challenge for developers of school leadership programs is to identify those factors that are of central importance in the preparation of school leaders, including …

Explaining Socioeconomic Inequalities In Student Achievement, Gary Marks, John Cresswell, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

This paper examines the extent that material, social, and cultural resources and schools account for the relationship between socioeconomic background and student achievement among 15-year-olds in 30 countries. Generally, cultural factors play a more important role in most countries although in a small minority of countries, material resources have a substantial impact. Most often, social resources have little impact. In many countries, educational differentiation - that is, school tracks and school types, and curriculum tracking within schools - mediates the relationship between socioeconomic background and student achievement. Countries with highly tracked systems tend to show stronger relationships. On average, over …

Dr Daniel Edwards

Each year, graduates of Australian higher education institutions who have completed a doctoral or research masters degree are invited by their institution and Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) to respond to the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ) about four months after graduation. This report presents the results from the eighth PREQ survey conducted since 1999. The PREQ asks graduates to respond to 28 statements about seven aspects of their research degree. The first 27 statements measure the quality of supervision, the intellectual climate of the department in which the respondent studied, the development of generic skills, the quality of the infrastructure …

Enhancing International Student Engagement In Australian Higher Education - Evidence From The 2007 Australasian Survey Of Student Engagement, Daniel Edwards, Hamish Coates

Dr Daniel Edwards

This analysis of data from the inaugural Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE) sheds light on the engagement and experiences of undergraduate international students in Australia. This paper first examines the differences in individual characteristics of international and domestic students, and explores disparities in specific areas of course engagement and university experiences of international students when compared to their domestic classmates. The paper then focuses on the six scales of student engagement used in the AUSSE and shows that there are differences within the international student cohort depending on field of study, year level and family education history. It concludes …

Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel E. Moll Jul 2008

Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel E. Moll

Michiel E Moll

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.

This paper first looks briefly at the changes in national curricula in South Africa, and then at the current curriculum, …

Young, Gifted And Indigenous: What Can We Learn From The North American Experience In Attempting To Meet The Needs Of Gifted Indigenous Students In Australia?, Jenny Wilkinson

Jenny Wilkinson (retired)

Five questions: 1. How should giftedness be defined? 2. Whose world view? 3. Should children/Indigenous children be identified as gifted? 4. If so, how should they be identified? Who should identify them? 5. If they are identified, how can their needs best be met?
