Source Text Re-Use In Engineering Thesis And Dissertation Literature Reviews: A Comparison [Powerpoint Presentation], Edward J. Eckel Mr.

Edward J Eckel

Using random samples of 150 engineering master's theses and 150 doctoral dissertations from the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database, the author conducted 30 Google searches of random seven word strings from the literature review sections for each thesis/dissertation, looking for textual matches to scholarly sources. The author then did a statistical comparison for significance between the thesis and dissertation data for the following measures: length of the longest verbatim string found for each thesis/dissertation, and the number of verbatim matches found for each thesis/dissertation. This study is designed to explore the following research question: Do engineering master's theses have more …

Investigating Item Difficulty Change By Item Positions Under The Rasch Model, Luc T. Le, Van Nguyen Apr 2011

Investigating Item Difficulty Change By Item Positions Under The Rasch Model, Luc T. Le, Van Nguyen

Dr Van Nguyen

In operational testing programs using item response theory (IRT), item parameter invariance is one of essential requirements in common item equating designs. However, in practice, the stability of item parameters can be affected by many factors. Particularly, this study utilised data from the large-scale Graduate Skills Assessment (GSA) in 2010 to investigate the change of Rasch item difficulty by item positions. The test included 78 multiple-choice items and was presented in eight test forms by arranging the items in different orders. Items addressed three components of generic skills: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Interpersonal Understandings. Each test form was randomly …

The New Millennium And Online Counseling: Ecological Practice, Concerns And Discussion, Oscar T. Mcknight

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

For counselors, the ecosystem is vast and encompassing; and professionals must understand the client in both context and time. This in and of itself is a daunting task; now, enter the New Millennium and on-line counseling. The Web is the poster child of interconnectivedness and interdependence of systems; however, is the Web bringing us closer or further apart? The Web is transforming society and potentially the ecological context of counseling. A review is necessary.

Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel Moll Jul 2008

Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel Moll

Michiel E Moll

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.

This paper first looks briefly at the changes in national curricula in South Africa, and then at the current curriculum, …
