Good morning and welcome to UNO's 2009 Fall Convocation. My sincere thanks to all attending today; and please know it is a privilege to stand before you as Chancellor of this great university and share this annual progress update.

By any standard of measurement, 2009, UNO's Centennial, was an extraordinary year for our campus. It began with the Fall Convocation, and the announcement that Senator Chuck Hagel, a UNO alum, would be locating his Congressional Archives in the Criss Library. Good morning, welcome to you all. Many thanks to Sally Ganem and all of our Centennial Hosts, our congressional delegation, Mayor Fahey, Regent Schroeder and members of the Board of Regents, President Milliken, International guests and all of our colleagues from throughout the University of Nebraska system for joining us on this very special day.

One year ago tomorrow, during my installation ceremony, a quote from the Danish philosopher Soren Kirkegaard provided a context for my remarks when he wrote, "Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forward."

The Institution As A Citizen: How Colleges And Universities Enhance Their Civic Roles, Nancy L. Thomas

This paper is premised on the assumption that civic responsibility is the contemporary version of higher education's historical outreach mission. With that as an understanding, it considers how best colleges and universities can fulfill this commitment of service to external communities, broadly defined to include local, national, and international concerns. The paper offers typologies of ways that institutions structure academic outreach, responsive curricula, land-grant and extension school programs, faculty professional service, coordinating student volunteerism and encouraging public access to campus for athletic or cultural events. Authors of this essay, also published in the NSEE Quarterly, argue that proponents of service-learning and faculty professional service should join forces to pursue a common agenda of community outreach. At a time when colleges and universities are being urged to help solve society's problems, the faculty represents a virtually untapped resource.
