Activist Board Games In Adult Education: Educational Philosophies, Learning Theories And Game Mechanics, Kamil M. Gerónimo-López

The use and design of activism board games in popular education are unexplored. This study explores the board game Rise-Up (TESA Collective, 2017). To gather data, game aesthetics were observed and analyzed. At least two issues are worth examining from an adult education lens, the operationalization of critical thinking and the relationship between educational goals and game mechanics.

This study explored how Students of Color within National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council sororities and fraternities engaged in activism and in what ways this involvement connected to their membership. Using a qualitative critical narrative approach, we examined the journeys of ten participants. Findings unpack ways participants engaged in activism and resistance aimed at educating individuals and increasing awareness of societal injustices, addressing inequities through service, and inciting disruption and cultivating institutional and societal level change.

Modern universities are intricate organizations with many stakeholders each with their own goals and objectives. In a time of resource scarcity, student affairs professionals are tasked with advocating on behalf of their students, staffs, departments, and priorities against more solvent operations. Effective managers and administrators must align their priorities with other actors on campus and in accordance with institutional values. This study asked how professionals engage in the advocacy process, including the strategies that they use. Utilizing the tempered radicals perspective, this qualitative study was conducted through four interviews with experienced senior level student affairs professionals.

This paper analyzes a shifting landscape of intellectual freedom (IF) in and outside Florida for children, adolescents, teens and adults. National ideals stand in tension with local and state developments, as new threats are visible in historical, legal, and technological context. Examples include doctrinal shifts, legislative bills, electronic surveillance and recent attempts to censor books, classroom texts, and reading lists.

This study examined how student affairs professionals, especially those in cultural centers, could increase campus diversity and inclusivity. More specifically, it sought to find a theoretical basis for social justice education programs that could increase campus climate. It was performed as a single site case study at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Three Cal Poly student affairs professionals were interviewed for qualitative data which were then compared and analyzed with the literature surrounding campus diversity and inclusivity. On October 11, 2014, Cornel West delivered the keynote address to nearly 600 students at the regional Leadership & Social Justice Conference, hosted at Saint Mary’s College of California. In this paper, we share insights from a research project that investigated the effects of a service learning experience in a graduate adult education seminar with an explicitly critical pedagogical focus and activist placements. We analyze a subset of the findings related to the lack of “choice” through a critique of CSL as a market commodity and argue that disrupting the hegemony of choice had implications for reconstructing student identities.

This paper employs critical social learning perspectives to investigate the themes of emotional resilience, intellectual resistance, and lifelong learning evident in the experiences of three gay male young adults whom I situate as activist-educators. I discuss how these young adults integrate emotional labour and social learning into resistance work to create counterpublics, which lay challenge to exclusionary heteronormative educational spaces.
