School-Based Services For Traumatized Refugee Children, Dana Doran-Myers, Susan C. Davies Oct 2009

School-Based Services For Traumatized Refugee Children, Dana Doran-Myers, Susan C. Davies

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

In 1991, civil war raged in Somalia and the country’s infrastructure began to disintegrate. Since then, millions have fled the violence and instability. Many Somali refugees have settled in the United States; Ohio now has the second larg- est settlement of Somali refugees in the country. Most of these refugees reside in the Columbus area, where numerous out- reach services have been developed. The Somalis are one of many refugee popula- tions that have enrolled children in Ohio schools. In such cases, there is often little or no warning of the children’s arrival and thus little time to prepare a …

Thomas Greenfield And The Quest For Meaning In Organizations: A Postponed Dialogue With Ludwig Wittgenstein, Gus Riveros Oct 2009

Thomas Greenfield And The Quest For Meaning In Organizations: A Postponed Dialogue With Ludwig Wittgenstein, Gus Riveros

Education Publications

In this paper I highlight the role of the notion of meaning for educational administration. I want draw attention to Thomas Greenfield’s theses regarding the role of meanings in organization. I explore the relations between Greenfield’s thesis about meaning in organization and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s thoughts about language and meaning. I shed some light on the encounters and distances between these two thinkers. My account is both exploratory and critical. On the one hand, I point up the relationships between meaning, practices, and action in organization. On the other hand, I identify one aspect of Greenfield’s thought that can be further …

The First Climate Action Plans Are In ..., Mark Askren, Wendell Brase

Information Technology Services: Publications

September 15, 2009, was the deadline for submitting climate action plans for the charter signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The reports on the site provide a reality check on sustainability efforts within higher education. The proposed climate-neutral dates confirm that this endeavor may be more challenging than some institutions initially realized. In many cases, the reports show that IT is not a major partner in campus sustainability planning; however, some notable exceptions do stand out.

Maybe we in the higher education IT community should roll up our sleeves and invite ourselves to the table, becoming …

Racial Isolation And Student Achievement, Peter J. Smith Oct 2009

Racial Isolation And Student Achievement, Peter J. Smith

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Achievement data of African American, Hispanic American, and Caucasian students from racially segregated and racially integrated settings in an urban, Midwestern school district were analyzed to determine the effect of racial isolation on achievement within each racial group. In the district studied, achievement of students from segregated schools was not significantly different from the achievement of same race students from integrated schools. The study’s results should encourage district officials and instructional leaders to look at those factors that have a positive impact on student achievement regardless of the level of racial isolation.

Walking The Talk: Educational Administration Candidates' Espoused And Observed Dispositions, Kay Anne Keiser, Peter J. Smith Oct 2009

Walking The Talk: Educational Administration Candidates' Espoused And Observed Dispositions, Kay Anne Keiser, Peter J. Smith

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Teachers who seek a career as a school administrator envision their leadership will be transformational and charismatic--and are often surprised by the conflict and confrontation that is an inevitable part of school administration (Hall, 2008; Hartzell, Williams, & Nelson, 1995; Sigford, 2005). Just as preservice teachers imagine a future career where all children love learning and respect teachers, only to find a reality that is less utopian (Su, 1992), this disconnect between the ideal of the vision and the reality and the new job often produces disappointment and shock (Senge, et al., 2000). The reality is that successful school leaders …

“If At First You Do Not Succeed:” A Study Of Teacher Resiliency In Sixteen Public Urban Elementary Schools, Jinny Youn Kim Oct 2009

“If At First You Do Not Succeed:” A Study Of Teacher Resiliency In Sixteen Public Urban Elementary Schools, Jinny Youn Kim

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Alarming K-12 nationwide teacher attrition statistics have led reform efforts to focus on teacher retention (Olsen & Anderson, 2007), especially in urban schools where teacher burnout and attrition are high (Darling-Hammond, 1998). It was not until recently, however, that teacher resiliency, a strengths based framework (Henderson & Milstein, 2003), was viewed as an alternate lens of reform in achieving higher teacher retention. This study utilized a Likert survey to quantify if 284 elementary teachers in sixteen, public urban elementary schools in two urban school districts in southern California agree or disagree with the six most significant school factors linked to …
