Students need and want to be heard and valued. It is extremely important for schools to be creative when choosing initiatives. Initiatives or any program implementation must be interesting and relevant to the diverse populations of students and their needs. It's time for schools to "Plug In." "New Outlets" are a Must. This workshop will provide educators with tools and strategies to use to build and sustain effective programs while working with Youth-At-Risk.

In order to effectively educate all students and make progress in closing the achievement gap, we must look at two areas for school improvement: positive relationships, and school policies and procedures. Participants in this group will walk away with strategies for building positive relationships, reducing the drop-out rate, and assisting students in meeting their goals. Participants will also learn how to evaluate current policies and procedures that may be restricting student growth or achievement through data awareness.

The dropout rate among Georgia high school students is a critical issue within the United States’ educational system. As a result, large numbers of programs have been created to reduce the dropout rate. This study examined the stakeholders’ perceptions of dropout prevention strategies in a rural ninth grade academy to examine effective dropout prevention programs implemented at the school. Participants in the study included administrators, teachers, and students who dropped out of the academy between 2009 and 2012. Interviews were conducted to gather information from the participants.
