Reducing Implicit Bias: Strategies For Educators, Counselors, And Higher Education Administrators, Tylon Crook, Torialyn Crook

National Cross-Cultural Counseling and Education Conference for Research, Action, and Change

This presentation will highlight implicit bias within K-16 educational settings. Implicit bias and how it manifests will be explored, including an examination of how it can negatively impact the academic, career, and personal/social development of k-16 students. Strategies that educators, counselors, and higher education administrators can employ to reduce implicit bias and increase advocacy within their respective settings will be put forward.

Senior citizens are becoming a larger and more significant part of the workforce as they desire to work longer. Companies have found these individuals bring valuable skills to the workplace; however, they frequently need to update those skills or pursue new degrees. Since 1976, Georgia has had a law granting senior citizens tuition waivers in the state’s public higher education institutions, thus allowing them the ability to take courses to update their skills. Making Sense Of Georgia School Leader Evaluation: Climate, Engagement And The District Office, Bipul Singh, Matt Townsley

Assessment of principal effectiveness is a complex process due to the multidimensional nature of their job. Historically, a disproportionate significance has been placed on standardized assessment scores when evaluating school leaders, therefore states are beginning to emphasize other factors such as school climate in order to increase employee retention. This study investigated any correlation between leadership effectiveness, the staff perception of school climate, and employee engagement in a suburban Georgia school district’s 139 schools. This engaging, interactive, self-reflective session focuses on equity at the classroom level. It challenges teachers to look within themselves relative to how they relate to and engage with their at-risk students of color and other underserved students. It challenges teachers to confront whatever biases they may bring to these students that may be either blatant, subtle, undetected or unacknowledged. It argues that high-performance is an impossibility in classroom environments where equity fails to exist.
