Race, as most social scientist would argue, is socially constructed, and from that premise there are those who would argue that since it is socially constructed, it isn’t real and therefore why do we even talk about it. However rather than going with that premise, we would argue that given that it is socially constructed, the fact that we are social beings and that we have been socialized to recognize the color of another’s skin, then it matters, and we need to talk about it.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is a diverse region with 7.7% of the world's population and 4.3% of the world's GDP (Abed & Davoodi, 2003). The region has approximately 75% of the world's oil supply. In spite of the oil exports, the 21 Arab countries, Afghanistan, Iran, and 2 territories of the region have some of the highest rates of unemployment and poverty in the world. The region also has a significantly large and growing population of children under 14. Couple this with serious environmental issues and there are critical consequences for the future. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of a required school year long Character Education and Class-Wide Peer Tutoring program (CE+CWPT) for students who scored at or below proficiency in one, two, or three of their reading fluency, reading comprehension, or writing assessments at the beginning of their 5th-grade school year. The study analyzed performance on criterion referenced tests, performance on norm-referenced tests, behavioral referrals, and attendance to determine what relationship, if any, exists between levels of achievement amongst students participating in a required CE+CWPT program. The purpose of this study was to investigate similarities and differences in coaching preferences among male and female basketball players based on gender and level of competition. Participants were 20 male and female basketball programs (2 NCAA Division I Teams, 4 High School Teams, and 4 Middle School Teams). The ages of the players ranged between 12 -24 years of age, with males and females having a comparable age distribution. The instrument used to collect data was the revised Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS) athlete preference version (Zhang & Jensen, 1997). The results of the statistical analyses using a two …
Leadership-Influenced Practices That Impact Classroom Instruction Related To Writing: A Case Study Of A Successful Elementary School, Barb Johnson

This research studied the practices of educators at an ethnically diverse suburban elementary school which had demonstrated success in the area of student writing, even among at-risk students. The overall research goal was to examine to what extent and how leadership-related practices impacted classroom instruction in a manner that helped produce successful writing scores. A case study approach was used to explore four key leadership-related practices (supervision, curriculum, professional development, and knowledgeable leaders) and their impact on classroom literacy-based instructional strategies.

Via a critical appropriation of ideas from cultural historical activity theory (CHAT), this paper addresses three shortcomings in adult learning theories: insufficient guidance regarding how to systematically analyze learning that occurs in everyday life; 2) absence of mechanisms for overcoming subject-object dualism; and 3) insufficient analytic consideration for collective subjects.

This paper reveals that scholar-official has impacted Chinese people’s view on careers by the imperial examination system for a long history. Tensions between higher education expansion and college student employment, the meaning of scholar-official and the imperial examinations, and the implication for developing tertiary vocational education in China are discussed.
