The Verbal Structure Of Teacher Questions: Its Impact On Class Discussion, John D. W. Andrews Jan 1980

The Verbal Structure Of Teacher Questions: Its Impact On Class Discussion, John D. W. Andrews

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Improving discussion participation is one of the most widespread concerns of college instructors. Like most consultants, I often make suggestions based on my own experience and on hunches formed from observing a variety of teachers at work. Yet I have felt the need to test these hunches, and to generate solutions to the problem that are based on objective, systematic evidence. To take a step in this direction has been the purpose of the research project presented here.

This study deals with the contribution made by the verbal structure of questions to the form and quality of discussions (1). This …

Staff Development: A Time For Appraisal, Gordon E. Watts, James O. Hammons Jan 1980

Staff Development: A Time For Appraisal, Gordon E. Watts, James O. Hammons

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

A 1975 ETS survey by John Centra reported that close to 60 percent of the 2600 degree granting institutions of higher education in the United States had some type of staff development program or someone who coordinated staff development activities (Centra, 1976). As the decade of the 80's begins, there are no indications that staff development has experienced the loss of momentum so characteristic of other innovative ventures in higher education; rather, the interest in the development of staff is continuing to grow. Evidence of this trend include the formation of two national organizations, the Professional and Organizational Development Network …

Learning Styles: A Tool For Faculty Development, Daniel W. Wheeler Jan 1980

Learning Styles: A Tool For Faculty Development, Daniel W. Wheeler

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Grasha and Reichmann (1975) developed a questionnaire to assess student learning style. This instrument allows the student to identify preferred styles described as Independent, Dependent, Avoidant, Competitive, Collaborative and Participant. This material has been used in various faculty development programs.

Kolb (1976, 1977) developed a self-report instrument, The Learning Style Inventory, to measure perceived learning styles. The instrument uses as its basis the experiential learning model with its origin in the work of Jung (1923) and Lewin (1945).

The Learning Style Inventory has been used to assess individual preference for the four identified learning abilities as shown in Figure 1. …

Executive Director's Message, Winter 1980, Lance C. Buhl

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

I suppose it is appropriate-symbolic, really-that this issue of the Quarterly is a double one. It would be convenient to gloss the matter over, to hype the fact that this is POD's first "double issue." Make the most of it; let everyone know how "innovative" we are. That would do an injustice to the deeper truth and to the frayed nerves of Glenn Nyre, who has been ready to go to press for a long time.

No. The fact is that the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education is still struggling to keep its head afloat in a …

Editor's Message, Winter 1980, Glenn F. Nyre

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

What does one write in one's final statement as editor? David Outcalt, the previous editor, suggested I remind the readership of how difficult it was to follow in his footsteps. Sandy Inglis, who will be the new editor, thought it might be appropriate to remind people of the hard work and long hours that accompany this position. Both are correct and deserve thanks and support, respectively. However, I have something else in mind.

Research In Support Of The College Teacher, B. Claude Mathis Oct 1979

Research In Support Of The College Teacher, B. Claude Mathis

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

College teaching has traditionally been regarded by a majority of its practitioners as a profession having much in common with the ministry. Those who commit their lives to the front lines of higher education often do so with a dedication which suggests having been called to the task by whatever teleology their disciplines embrace. Teaching in this context becomes a mystical skill which, in its existential unfoldings, loses its artful essence if studied in the objective light of empirical analysis. Those who attempt to study teaching and learning do so at the risk of creating a network of knowledge about …

Heron: A Mini-P.O.D., D. Joseph Clark

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

P.O.D. has been concerned about the growth and development of its membership since it began. While we number about 300 members, a large number of people seem to join for one year and then fail to renew their membership. CORE has interpreted this as a lack of tangible pay-off for many people who need more than an annual meeting to help them face local responsibilities. The following report about a new faculty development network which has been formed in the Pacific Northwest has a point to consider for those interested in the continued well-being of P.O.D.

This issue also marks the beginning of a series of brief discussions of the most prominent and influential models in educational and social science evaluation practice.

What Do We Know About Faculty? A New Way Of Looking, Robert E. Young Oct 1979

What Do We Know About Faculty? A New Way Of Looking, Robert E. Young

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Faculty development puts a focus on individual faculty members, their professional and personal lives. But what do we really know about faculty members? What do we know about how they think and act? What do we know about how they learn and develop in their many roles? In this article, I want to review some of what we do and do not know and propose a way to organize our understanding of faculty members as individuals.

Although an official and on-going questionnaire will evolve along with the Quarterly itself, what is needed at this time is input from the readership concerning emphases and directions for future issues. The desire of the Editorial Board is to publish a journal for POD-types which is topical, helpful, interesting and all sorts of other good things. Please let us know to what degree this has been achieved in this issue, as well as what you think should or could be done in the future, by answering the following questions.
