Project Good Start investigated the effectiveness of numeracy programmes for Australian children in the year before school and the first year of schooling. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected from pre-schools, early childhood centres and primary schools, tovinvestigate the practice and learning experiences that best support children’s early numeracy development.

This paper highlights the need for a strengths-based approach to school readiness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, in order to recognise the skills, cultural knowledge and understandings they already have when they transition to formal learning. The study, a joint project by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), reviews the literature and uses a strength-based analysis of information from Footprints in Time: The Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) to examine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s abilities and knowledge at 4-6 years of age. …

The rapid growth of information over the last thirty or forty years has made it impossible for educators to prepare students for the future without teaching them how to be effective information managers. The American Library Association refers to those students who manage information effectively as information literate. Information literacy instruction has been a priority in many secondary schools since the American Association of School Libraries published the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning in 1998. Feelings toward mothers, fathers, and closest siblings were examined in a sample of 132 late adolescent women and men who were experiencing the transition of entering college. The emotional support of siblings and mothers was more important for late adolescent women than for men. Compared to men, women also turned more to their mothers and siblings for discussion of feelings, ideas, work, and activities, and for help and guidance. In contrast, compared to women, late adolescent men felt that their fathers told them what to do more. Closest siblings did not emerge as the most important emotionally supportive figures in …

Vaccination coverage levels among 2-year-old children for each of three routinely recommended vaccines--diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis (DTP), oral poliovirus (OPV), and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)--are lower than the national Childhood Immunization Initiative (CII) goal of 90% coverage for these vaccines (1.2). During 1991-1992, CDC awarded contracts to four universities (in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Rochester, New York) to conduct evaluations to identify causes of undervaccination, characterize and quantify missed opportunities (MOs) to vaccinate, and assess their programmatic importance. The evaluations targeted high-risk racial/ethnic minority children in inner-city settings in the four urban sites. This report summarizes selected findings* from …
