Correspondence From A Umaine Alumnus, Name Redacted, Howard R. Neville

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Handwritten, one-and-a half-page letter from a UMaine alumnus located in Michigan denouncing the University's position regarding the Wilde-Stein Club and "gay symposium." Transcription: March 24, 1973 Gentlemen, For many years I contributed to the Alumni Fund but I find it impossible to do anymore. Although I have not lived in the state since graduation, I have been kept informed. What I have heard, I do not agree with. The policy changes at the U of M, during recent years, are not ones that I in any way can support. The Homosexual Convention was the last straw. You can cross me …

The source of information used to answer the central question were: interviews with and questionnaire responses of contemporaries of Knowles and Malcolm S. Knowles who served as "prime information resource;" writing so Knowles and others; and documents and proceedings of a variety of organizations influenced by Knowles. The Vietnam-Era Veteran Enters College, David E. Drew, John A. Creager Jan 1972

The Vietnam-Era Veteran Enters College, David E. Drew, John A. Creager

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

During the past few years, new kinds of students have been entering our colleges and universities. No longer can the uppermiddle class white male, who moves smoothly from a college preparatory program in high school directly into college, be regarded as the "typical" student. Among the various groups of nontraditional students that make for greater heterogeneity within the college population are those from racial or ethnic minorities, those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, those whose academic ability or high school preparation is relatively poor (as judged by conventional criteria) and those who are older than the average undergraduate. One subgroup of …

The Individual Child, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer) Jan 1952

The Individual Child, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

Primary School Studies

First published in 1952, this pamphlet suggests that schools should consider the needs and possibilities of each, individual child and cater the curriculum accordingly, to meet those needs. It suggests two considerations in determining best practice: determining the ‘learning level’ and ‘learning load’ of each student. It also emphasises the need to distinguish between achievement and capacity, in measuring students’ success. The pamphlet argues that the aim of a ’vigorous and progressive education’ should be to promote student independence.

A Proposed Administrative And Supervisory Organization For Vocational Rehabilitation In Kentucky, Clifton Cook Aug 1946

A Proposed Administrative And Supervisory Organization For Vocational Rehabilitation In Kentucky, Clifton Cook

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The urgent need for tapping new reserves of manpower during the recent war emergency caused new stress to be put upon the rehabilitation of handicapped individuals. Employers were more willing than ever before to give the handicapped person a chance to prove that he could produce in competition with those who were physically whole. These two factors combined to bring about an increase in the staff personnel in Kentucky in such a short period of time that it was impossible to revise the organization of this division of the State Department of Education rapidly enough to keep pace with its …

Better Than Nothing, But..., Lyman M. Partridge Dec 1945

Better Than Nothing, But..., Lyman M. Partridge

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

While the majority of parents, teachers and administrators are fully aware of the importance of a program of hearing conservation in the schools and readily endorse one, I am convinced that they are not aware of the serious inadequacies of the method of testing the hearing ability of school children that is generally used throughout the state of Washington.

Housing Needs, Helen Michaelsen May 1942

Housing Needs, Helen Michaelsen

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

We have a responsibility to influence for good the fundamental character of American housing by stressing essentials. What is essential at the beginning; what, if anything at the end? Not home ownership-a house and garden for everyone-but standards of upkeep, ethics for tenants, minor improvements of present home conditions, order and intelligence in the utilization of space, adjusting the old house to meet present needs, making best use of what one already has.
