The writers criticize the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the ensuing military and political occupation of the country. They suggest a link between aggressive U.S. military posture and neoliberal globalization and contend that the current situation in Iraq is a metaphor for globalized capitalism across the world. The writers then consider issues surrounding the politics of organization in the search for a socialist alternative to free market capitalism and discuss how critical educators can reinvigorate the civil societarian left at a time when elites are less accountable to civil society than ever before.

A Fairy Tale About Teacher Research In Conservative Times, Collaborative Action Researchers For Democratic Communities, Suzanne Soohoo, Lani Martin, Tom Wilson, Emily Wolk
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Collaborative action research involves creating spaces for thoughtful discussion, not only about classroom practices but about schooling in general. The fairy tale created by the authors of this piece raises questions about autonomy, control, and the need for participation in the context of the current conservative climate.

As a faculty member in the College of Business, one of my favorite activities is advising new students during registration time. After looking over the course schedule book and deflecting questions concerning the identity of the easiest professor in Writing I, I like to talk with students about their personal goals and dreams for the future.

"Dope is Death" started as a study document for revolutionary nationalist cadres in the 1980s at the height of the Crack Wars and Reaganomics. It was later published in the September/October 1987 issue of "By Any Means Necessary!" newspaper published by the New Afrikan People's Organization. In recent years many critics have written of the pervasive dehumanization and possible rehumanization of education. Plighting their troth to the autonomy and integrity of the human person, these commentators scour the educational landscape in search of policies and practices that depersonalize. They have often attacked teaching methods and the social and institutional situation in which teaching is undertaken; a few errant knights have even assailed the enterprise of teaching itself. Less often has curriculum content been questioned, and when it has been, the critics were usually concerned about "irrelevance." There is, however, another way in which the curriculum is …

The War And The Public Schools, Emil E. Samuelson
The War And The Public Schools, Emil E. Samuelson
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
Now that the war is here, teachers and school administrators are being assailed by doubts and misgivings as to the importance of their day-by-day tasks. When a nation engages in war, it temporarily sets aside the more thoughtful and humane methods of improving human relationships and becomes absorbed in projecting a more immediate program for achieving an important national objective. Almost inevitably, public education in this country now faces stiff competition and struggle.
Teachers And Social Leadership, Emil E. Samuelson
Teachers And Social Leadership, Emil E. Samuelson

The argument that the schools can do a great deal to direct and facilitate social change seems valid when we consider the school's sphere of influence. Today a million teachers are entrusted with the task of educating more than 25,000,000 pupils. For twelve years these millions of boys and girls are under the direction of school teachers--certainly no other professional or civic group has an opportunity of like magnitude. If the teaching group should effectively unite upon a comprehensive program its influence on social change would be considerable.
