Effects Of Choice Reading On Intrinsic Motivation In Underperforming Sixth-Grade Students, Heather M. Henderson
Theses and Dissertations
This single-case study was designed to evaluate the effects of autonomous text choice on reading motivation and reading comprehension in underperforming sixth-grade students. This study was built upon the theoretical framework constructed using self-determination theory, situational expectancy–value theory, and culturally relevant pedagogy. Study participants were asked to read a text of their choice for ten minutes each day. Once a week, study participants were observed during their reading time for off-task behaviors to frame discussions on student engagement with their chosen texts, and every other week during the course of the intervention, participants were provided with an opportunity to give …

New Literacies In The Classroom: An Exploration Of The Differences In Reading Comprehension Between New And Traditional Literacies, Brenna A. Holsclaw
Culminating Experience Projects
The use of New Literacies within the classroom has become commonplace over the last few years, as educators work to stay engaging and meet the needs of students in our rapidly changing world. While there are many potential benefits in using these technologies, this project asserts the importance of explicit instruction in the realm of new literacy mediums, as research indicates that reading and writing practices face different struggles between traditional mediums and digital mediums. In spite of this, most educators are unaware that new literacies need to be addressed in a different manner than traditional literacies and continue to …

The use of student-generated materials allows for an authentic medium of communication, enabling students to practice their language learning skills using topics of social and personal relevance. From a teaching perspective, this is extremely important; it can increase students’ motivation, stepping …
Rc-Maps: Bridging The Comprehension Gap In Eap Reading, Angela Meyer Sterzik, Carol Fraser
Rc-Maps: Bridging The Comprehension Gap In Eap Reading, Angela Meyer Sterzik, Carol Fraser
Faculty & Staff Publications - ELI
In academic environments, reading is assigned not simply to transmit information; students are required to take the information, and based on the task set by the instructor, assess, analyze, and critique it on the basis of personal experiences, prior knowledge, and other readings (Grabe, 2009). Thus text-based comprehension (Kintsch, 1998) alone is not sufficient for academic success. Top-down processing is also required; this involves applying prior knowledge to define purpose(s), to make and verify hypotheses, and to infer and question content (Macaro & Erler, 2008; Urquhart & Weir, 1991). Although research has given teachers direction regarding the approach to use …

Methods For Encouraging Economic Diversity In Academically Rigorous Courses, Karen Patricia Kraabel
All Graduate Projects
In International Baccalaureate (IB) classes at Thomas Jefferson High School, the economic status of students in honors classes does not reflect that of the school as a whole. The author sought ways to bring more students from impoverished backgrounds into rigorous courses. In this school, there is a strong coincidence between etlmic minority status and socioeconomic status. The author believed that in addressing the economic issue the ethnicity issue would also be addressed. This is a practical issue as well as a pedagogical one, because the school's scores on state-wide standardized tests are lower for economically disadvantaged students than for …
