Effects Of Engagements And Presentation Order In Informal Science Presentations, William Henry Katzman
Effects Of Engagements And Presentation Order In Informal Science Presentations, William Henry Katzman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Science museums conduct presentations for their audiences to attract and educate visitors, yet research on presentations has primarily concentrated on whether individual presentations were effective. This mixed-methods, quasi-experimental study looks at how the presenter’s mental and physical engagements within a presentation affects audience members by altering sociocultural context of the presentation.
Physical engagements involve asking audience members to physically participate, while mental engagements involved asking audience members to make predictions prior to observing a demonstration. Audiences were given presentations containing: 1) Both mental and physical engagements, 2) Physical engagements only, 3) Mental engagements only or 4) No engagements (control).

International Studies Poster Gallery: Sharing Undergraduate Research In The Time Of Covid-19, Erin M. Weber
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
While the Covid-19 pandemic has brought many challenges to information literacy instruction, it has also provided opportunities to find unique ways to use digital tools to showcase student learning. One such virtual learning opportunity was the International Studies Poster Gallery, a collaborative effort between the Paul Meek Library and College of Business and Global Affairs at the University of Tennessee at Martin. This Poster Gallery built on an in-person event from the previous year to move the student poster presentations into a virtual space. Senior students studying International Studies spent the semester researching their topics, and then presented their poster …

Digital Landscape: Embracing The Reality, Carol Sternberger

Educators must be responsive to industry’s dynamic, technology rich environment. It is important for universities to move beyond expecting graduates to have isolated technology skills. Designing curricula that will produce graduates who are comfortable using technology and possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize data requires a different approach to education. The paper focuses on the various technologies integrated in a graduate course designed to prepare nurse educators to work in both academic and clinical environments. Best practices, evidence-based methods and integrated concepts from a requisite informatics course were foundational in the course assignments that focused on the implementation …

Product Design uses a human-centered process to develop solutions that solve unmet user needs. Because of the sequential nature of this activity, final designs are often presented in printed process books or digital slideshows, which visually communicate the development of the solution from start to finish rather than focusing just on the final result. Storytelling is a key element to consider when creating these process books in order to communicate the design solution as well as where it came from. An alternative to these presentations is the use of short videos, which offer the advantage of communicating the design process …

Open content is a movement that includes open access, open science, open educational resources, and open culture. A rising tide of open content challenges libraries to develop services that comprehensively address the explosion of “open” across all areas of education, science, and society. Learn what a public university envisions for a new professional position - an open content librarian to lead the integration of open content into all areas of undergraduate learning, and teacher education.
Changing Paradigms In Online Education: Perceptions And Experiences Of Nontraditional Adult Learners In The Emergency Services, R. Jeffery Maxfield
Changing Paradigms In Online Education: Perceptions And Experiences Of Nontraditional Adult Learners In The Emergency Services, R. Jeffery Maxfield
R. Jeffery Maxfield
Planning for the unknown incident or emergency event makes the task of college and university educators not only interesting, but also extremely challenging. Max van Manen (1990) argued that the prescribed method for human science, in contrast to natural science involved description, interpretations, and self-reflective or critical analysis. In other words, we explain nature, but we must understand human life. This assertion seems to suggest learning strategies that expand beyond traditional pedagogies. The experience of nontraditional, emergency services students, in an asynchronous online environment appeared to be filled with comparison and contrast. While using prior experience and learning schemas, the …

Using Critical Reflection As An Applied Learning Technique Among Online Emergency Services Students, R. Jeffery Maxfield, John Fisher

Non-traditional students in an online introductory course in Homeland Security used the DEAL model of critical reflection to describe (a) what they learned, (b) how they learned it, (c)why it matters, and (d) what they will do with what they learned. Online discussion of readings proved to be the most effective learning technique used in the course because it incorporated reflective practices and allowed application of real-life experiences.

Reflective Practices In Online Education For Non-Traditional Students, Dr. R. Jeffery Maxfield
Reflective Practices In Online Education For Non-Traditional Students, Dr. R. Jeffery Maxfield
R. Jeffery Maxfield
The goal of this research was to better understand the lived experiences and perceptions of nontraditional, adult college students in an asynchronous online environment. Contemporary researchers have investigated the differences between online education and the traditional, in-class learning. Most of the work has been done in quantitative methodologies, focusing on the similarities and differences in cognitive achievement. The extant literature is replete with studies and positions claiming little or no difference between the two delivery methods. However, most research is not presented in a theoretical construct; therefore, it is difficult to create a nexus between one study and the next. …

We begin our presentation with an overview of Google Tools and the benefits of using them in your classroom. We will discuss methods to increase student access to information, decrease workloads, and create collaborative opportunities. With the current economic times, budgets are feeling the strain, as are teachers and faculty in Higher Education settings. With web 2.0 tools, specifically Google Tools, we are empowered to use the technology to decrease our budgets, create a paperless environment, and introduce collaborative learning environments into our curriculum.
Our research serves to legitimize teachers in order to empower them to encourage our digital natives …
